I threw the ice pack on the top of the desk.

Dom took a slow sip of the scotch in his glass. I wanted one, but I needed to keep my wits about me. Dom and I hadn’t even gotten to the worst part of all this yet. I closed my eyes as I thought about it. My brother was going to shit a brick when I told him.

“Fuck, Marco,” Dom said. He ran a hand through his dark hair. “You have no idea what you got yourself into this time.”

I raised a brow. “I’ve got a head injury, so you are going to need to speak slowly.”

“The person you killed was Adrian Ivanov.”

“Is that supposed to mean something to me?” It didn’t. I never took the time to learn the members of the Bratva. They were all assholes, and when I ran into them, I tended to shoot first, and ask questions never.

Dom always asked questions. It was annoying. “He’s Maksim Ivanov’s nephew.”

I leaned back slightly. The pounding in my head intensified. “Shit,” I muttered.

Dom nodded. “Yes. Shit indeed.”

Maksim was the current Pakhan. He’d taken over after the fall of the Petrov family. His daughter Anastasia had been murdered by Katarina, and Maksim wanted anyone involved to pay, specifically with their lives.

“Maybe he’ll be happy. After all, I did him a favor.” I was being glib but serious. I didn’t see why Maksim would care.

“Family is family,” he said. “Maksim will want to avenge his nephew’s death.”

Maksim Ivanov could fuck off for all I cared. I wasn’t scared of the old bastard. From what I heard, he was older than Isaac had been, with one foot in the grave already.

“The only thing that we have going for us is that Red’s doesn’t have cameras, and no one spotted you.”

For a moment, I considered telling Dom the truth. Someone had seen me, and she’d smashed my head in with a bottle. I realized that he assumed my head wound came from Adrian.

“Everything’s cleaned up.” He glanced at his phone, no doubt getting an update from the clean-up crew.

I nodded. I wanted out of Dom’s office. Despite my irritation at my brother, I didn’t like lying to him, but I needed a chance to figure this shit out before I told him that I hadn’t gotten away from the scene without being caught.

“You should stay here tonight.” Dom’s eyes immediately went to the bloody rag on his desk. “You could have a concussion.”

“I’ll be fine.” I got up from my chair. I wasn’t going to be sleeping any time soon.

Dom opened his mouth to say something, but snapped it shut. “Fine.”

“Give Sasha my apologies. I didn’t mean to drag you out of bed.”

Dom smiled. It was an involuntary reaction whenever anyone mentioned his wife. “She would have stayed, but she tires easily these days.”

I said nothing. Sasha was pregnant with their first child, and while I was glad for them, there was too much change happening in our lives.

“Call me tomorrow,” Dom ordered.

I raised a hand in acknowledgement.

“And stay out of trouble!”

I shut the door without acknowledging the last bit of what he said to me.

“I’m surprised to see you here still.” Alex was sitting outside of Dom’s office in one of the decorative chairs that Sasha had put in the place. It made Dom’s space look more like the office of a CEO rather than that of a mafia boss.

Alex pushed himself up from his seat. “I wanted to stick around to see if Dom needed help with your body after he killed you.”

I chuckled as I walked past my cousin. “Looks like I am going to live to see another day.”
