I looked around and realized that there was a small amount of people gathering. I cursed under my breath for more than one reason. I was not surprised that no one was reaching out to help me. New Yorkers were more of the stare and watch type, but I was annoyed that the crowd meant that I was going to have to put my blade away.

I closed it with a snap but kept my fingers tight around the hilt.

“What is it that you want?” I asked, not taking my eyes off of the man in front of me.

“How about we go get some pizza?”

My mouth dropped open, and I released a small, short laugh. “Seriously?”

He shrugged. “Why not?”

“Because we are mortal enemies.” Was this guy for real? I could not be sure. I had never met the Blanchi brothers, but their reputation preceded them. From what I knew, they were ruthless, and they enjoyed killing members of my family.

Though they did not normally target women and children, some had wound up as collateral damage in the war that had been raging for years between the two families.

“Come on,” he said, trying to coax me forward. “I know a great place nearby.”

I crossed my arms over my chest. “Even if I wasn’t worried that you are trying to lure me into a trap, I’m not in the habit of following people to random locations.”

He stepped forward, and I did everything that I could to hold my ground. He reached his hand out. “Andrea Blanchi. Nice to meet you.”

I looked at his hand debating what to do next. Andrea was the younger son, and from what I knew, he was bloodthirsty. It made sense, considering that he was bred to be the enforcer for his brother. But as he stood before me with his hand outstretched and a wide smile on his face, there was a softness about him that made me wonder if his reputation was not as hard earned as one would think.

“Fine,” I said. “I’ll get pizza, but only because I’m drunk, and pizza sounds amazing.”

He chuckled. “Whatever works.”
