CHAPTERTEN

A week had gone by since my interaction with Leo, and things had been quiet. I hadn’t heard from him, or my father, or even Andrea.

For the first few days, I felt on edge, but as my life slipped back to normal, even that feeling started to fade.

Part of that was because classes were back in session, and I was busier than I could imagine.

I spent more time in the library studying than even in my own house. I’d seen Natasha once or twice when I went home to grab a quick meal, and she seemed well enough. I did not know what she got up to when I was not home since she did not have a job and wasn’t going to school.

I was pretty sure that I would lose my mind if I was simply sitting at home all day. School was challenging, but I loved it. It made me feel useful.

Even now, as I kept my head down and buried in my books, scribbling notes away in my notebook in the dim lighting.

“What’s a pretty girl like you doing in a place like this,” a deep voice said.

I lifted my head, startled to see Leo Petrov across from me.

I stared at him for several seconds as I tried to comprehend that Leo was sitting across from me dressed casually in a red button up with a white t-shirt. His dark hair was styled so that it flopped over his left eye. He looked younger than the last two times that we’d interacted.

“What are you doing here?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

“Let’s go to dinner,” he said.

My mouth dropped open. “What?”

“Dinner. Let’s go get some.”

“Why?”

Leo made a big deal of rolling his eyes. He leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest, so that his bicep muscles bulged out of his shirt. “We should spend time together.”

“Isn’t there a cocktail party being hosted by one of the Bratva members this weekend?” I asked. “I’m pretty sure that we are both going to be in attendance.” I looked back down at my notes. “We can spend time together then.”

Leo shook his head. “I want to see you outside of Bratva events.”

My brow rose. The last time I had seen Leo had been at dinner. He’d had his fingers inside of me, and then ripped them out because I would not tell him I was his good girl.

I rolled my eyes as I recalled his actions. Leo wanted to control me just like every other person in my life, and I was not interested.

I’d rather be celibate for the rest of my life if that was what he wanted.

“Not interested.” I went back to my book. I was reading about supply and demand, and analyzing a case study, which I thought was much more interesting than the idea of having dinner with Leo.

Leo’s large hand slammed down on my book. The sound of it made me jump, and a bunch of students who were also sitting around me looked up glaring. “Can you stop?” I hissed out. “I’m trying to study.”

“Take a break.”

I took a deep breath in an effort to control my growing anger. Leo was high handed. I wasn’t shocked after all, he was a Bratva man, and they all believed that they were such a gift.

“No,” I said. “I have to finish. I have a paper due in a few days, and I’m behind because of you.”

“Because of me?”

I nodded. “I was supposed to be here this weekend, but instead, I was sitting around playing nice with you because my father threatened to yank my tuition if I didn’t.”

“That was you playing nice?” He chuckled, and I tensed. I looked around and realized that we were drawing even more glares.

I reached out and began grabbing all of my things, shoving them into my bag as quickly as I could.
