“Sorry,” I said to those around me. None of them said anything, but the looks of annoyance did not dissipate as I rushed out of the library.

Leo trailed behind me. “How do you feel about Italian?” he asked. “I know we don’t like them as people, but I don’t think that we need to take it out on the food.”

I said nothing as I lifted my bag on my shoulder and rushed out into the city. It was late enough that there weren't a ton of people on the streets. I was surprised by how late it was. I had been in the library since the afternoon, and I had been so focused that I had not checked my watch even once.

“Are you going to tell me what you would like to eat, or should I try and read your mind?”

“If you could read my mind, then you would know that I do not want to go to dinner with you,” I spat out. “And frankly, I do not know what makes you think that I would want to spend any more time with you than I have to.”

I walked away hoping that Leo would leave me be. I had a lot to do, and I was not in the mood for Bratva bullshit. If my father was going to pass me over as Pakhan, then he was going to get minimum effort from me.

But Leo was not going to just let me go. He reached out and snagged my wrist. “Let me go,” I snapped.

“Come on. I just want to have dinner.”

“Why though?” I asked. “You’ve made it pretty obvious that you are about as interested in this farce as I am.”

“What makes you think I wouldn’t want to marry you? From what I have seen, you seem to think that every man wants you.”

I knew that Leo was trying to bait me, and normally, it would work, but I was exhausted. I’d been studying all day, and I’d had classes all week. I was not interested in another round with him.

“I have work to do,” I said, wrenching my arm from him. I suspected that he allowed me to do just that.

“Is this about what happened in the bathroom?” he asked.

I stopped. The bathroom thing pissed me off. A lot. Even more so because my body had been on fire for him. The entire time at dinner I pictured his long hands on my body, and I knew that he knew that. He spent most of the dinner smirking over at me from the rim of his wine glass as I squirmed in my chair.

Not that I had any plans to make him aware that that night, I’d crawled into bed and brought myself to orgasm with my own fingers as I thought of his breath playing against my skin.

“What happened in the bathroom was a little blip on the radar of my life,” I told him. I lifted my bag, which took a great deal of strength considering the amount of crap that I hauled back and forth between my apartment and school. “This might not have sunk in, but I can assure you that I have a lot more going on than you.”

Leo’s eyes softened slightly. “Let me take you out for dinner. No pressure. Just two people getting to know one another. Even if you don’t like me, you’ve got to eat.”

My stomach grumbled, and Leo fixed me with a look as if to say “See.”

I released a heavy sigh. “Fine,” I told him. “But I want a burger, and you have to help me write my paper.”

This made him laugh. “I think that I can do that.”

I handed him my bag. “Good,” I said, flipping my braid. “You can put that expensive degree my father forced you to get to good use.”
