“You will have it, always. I am yours to command, my love.”

Her head reclined onto his shoulder again with a sigh. “I should very much like your support, Will. I know I pretended to be angry about it when you first suggested it, but I thought perhaps if we quarrelled, it would make it easier to break our betrothal. But you would not quarrel with me, you lovely man, and now… I always dealt with Mr Ogilvy by letter before, and that was not so bad. But when I came up to town, I had to meet him, and I felt… uneasy. The world of business is so unfamiliar to me. I should have been so much happier if you had been with me. Or if you had gone to see him in my stead. Will you do that for me in future?”

“You deserve better than me, but I will strive every single day to be worthy of you, my sweet love. I love you so much, my darling Eloise.”

“And I love you too, my great handsome charming rogue.”

The carriage lurched to a halt, and the door opened to reveal one of the myriad of Marford House footmen.

“Not yet,” Will said, and the fellow promptly slammed the door shut.

Eloise gave a little laugh in the darkness. “What do you have in mind, Will Fletcher?”

“This,” he said, finding her lips with unerring instinct.

Within the carriage, silence reigned for a long, long time.
