“What’s that?”

“More antibiotics. She’s on a very heavy course of antibiotics to try to stop this infection in its tracks.”

“Can my brother and his wife come in?”

“As long as nobody is going to upset her and it needs to be a short visit.”

To: Alexander… The nurse says that you both can come in as long as you don’t stay long or upset her.

From: Alexander… On our way.

The nurse checks her vitals, “You’re doing better. Your blood pressure is normal again. Your fever has broken. That’s a sign that the medication is working. I’ll be back in a few hours to give you antibiotics again. In the meantime, let me know if you need anything.”

“Can I get water?”

I stood up, “I’ll get it.”

The nurse smiles at me.

“I’ll be right back, baby.”

On my way back in, I hear Alexander and Scarlet talking to Stella.

“I didn’t know if I could be a wife and mother. I still don’t know if I can be what he needs.”

“You’re everything he needs. I’ve never seen my brother so happy. I’ve never seen him more broken than he was when he thought you were gone.”

“I run because I’m so scared. I see that when I run it hurts him so deeply.”

“It does. The only way to get past the fear is to stop running, Stella.”

“I know.”

“Do you love him? Really love him?”

“Oh, more than you can imagine. When I was dying, the thought of leaving him was paralyzing. I’ve never felt like this. It’s electrifying but terrifying at the same time.”

“Then stay and fight,” I see him glance at Scarlet.

“Always stay and fight. It’s worth it.”

Scarlet puts her hand on Stella’s, “It is worth it. Stay and fight.”

“I’m not sure I’d have a choice. He said he’d follow me to the ends of the earth,” she laughed.

“Yes, my little brother has a bit of a stalker tendency with you. He’s never been like that before. He loves you. If he really didn’t want to be with you, I think he’d let you go. He wants you to be happy, Stella. Above anything else.”

I clear my throat as I walk in with Stella’s water.

Handing Stella her water, I said, “I’m gonna go for a bit.”

“Jamie no don’t go.”

“I think it’s for the best. I love you Stella,” as I walk out of the room I hear her cry.

Alexander said, “He heard us.”

“I didn’t mean that I didn’t want to be with him.”
