“H-how long is the ride?” I ask him, trying to distract myself from how freakinggoodit feels to be held by this man.

“The invite said that the ferry runs every half hour, so it shouldn’t be that much longer.”

Sure enough, as soon as he says that, a tiny island comes into view. It’s really not that big, and it’s not too far from the beach, so I can see how they could have floated out there.

“Let’s go down and get ready. I think we’re running a little late,” he says. Kai steps back, and I almost weep at the loss of contact. He holds out his hand for me, and I follow him back downstairs.

Once the ferry stops at this tiny little dock, I frown. When I notice that we’re the only ones getting off here, I start to really get worried.

“Just how late are we?” I ask as we hurry to the sand.

“I didn’t think we were this far off the timing,” Kai murmurs.

The ferry takes off as we reach the beach, and I bend to take off my shoes. I wiggle my toes in the sand, then look up at Kai, who is staring at my feet. He snaps his eyes up to mine, giving me a charming grin.I wonder what he’s thinking about?

“Where to?” I ask.

“It’s on the beach, so let’s head this way.”

We start to walk along the water, and by the time we make it all the way around and back to the dock, I’m out of breath from trying to keep up with Kai’s long strides in the sand.

“Are you sure this is the right island?” I ask him as he looks around.

“I think so. I mean, when I said that we were here for the wedding, the clerk looked a little confused but gave me these tickets, and the boat stopped here.”

“Maybe the clerk was wrong?”

“There wasn’t any other option, though,” Kai says slowly, and I frown.

“You definitely have the right date?” I ask him as he pulls out his phone and checks something.

“Yeah,” he says slowly, still scrolling through his phone. “Oh.”

“What, oh?” I ask him, moving closer. Kai flashes the phone screen at me, and I squint, trying to read it. The letters bounce off the screen, dancing around and making it impossible to discern them.

I try not to panic as I stare at his phone. Usually, I don’t have this much trouble reading everyday things, but I must be amped up from this whole situation.

“The wedding has been called off,” Kai mercifully says.

“What? Why?” I shout before I can stop myself.

“The bride was caught cheating with one of the groom’s friends. They canceled it this morning,” he says as he reads the email.

“Oh my gosh! That’s terrible!”

“Yeah, but I’m not surprised. She cheated on him in high school, too,” he says, shoving his phone back in his pocket.

“The ferry,” I say slowly, looking over to the deserted dock.

“I’m sure that it will be back soon. Every half an hour, remember?” I nod, but he must sense my apprehension. Kai taps his phone a few more times, then hands it to me. “Here’s the ferry schedule if you want to check when the next one is coming.”

“It’s okay,” I’m quick to say, not taking his phone.

“Go for it,” he insists, offering his phone again. “I don’t have anything to hide on my phone,” Kai jokes.

If only an errant dick pic were the worst of my problems. If I’m spiraling so much I can’t read an email, I certainly can’t make sense of a spreadsheet.

I take his phone just so he’ll stop insisting on it, scrolling mindlessly through the lines of gibberish.
