Tristan had said it’d been three weeks. Does Vina know? What about my family?

The door opened. Tristan walked in with a takeout bag. He gave me a warm smile as he walked to the bed.

“You’re awake. I brought you something to eat.”

“I’m not hungry,” I said plainly and looked away.

“Okay, what’s wrong?” he said, taking the seat next to the bed.

“What’s wrong?” I turned to look at him. “I told you the person behind my attack and the person responsible for the stuff you found in your room, and you thought I was crazy.”

“I don’t think you’re crazy. I have only known Karen for, like, six months. She is not the one, and the doctor said—”

“To hell with what the doctor said! I am fine. I remember everything from that night. She’s the one, Tristan. She mentioned Fiona that night. She said she was doing this for her. Remember Fiona? The one you always call when you’re having a nightmare,” I said in desperate need for him to believe me.

Something flickered in his eyes. He looked away from me and stayed mute for some seconds.

“Tristan?”

“That’s impossible, Chloe. Karen wasn’t even in town that night. I’m sure it was someone else.” He groaned and ran both hands down his face.

“I am not making this up!” I almost screamed. Frustration flowing through my blood cells.

“You have an internal injury in your brain, and the doctors—”

“Why won’t you believe me?” I cut in with tears in my eyes.

“Chloe, I’m not calling you a liar. You just got out of a coma. You need to focus on getting better. I’m working on it. I will catch whoever this person is. If I had known this wasn’t over, I wouldn’t have fired the bodyguards. The security footage from that night was all blank, but don’t worry; we’ll find the person responsible. I promise.”

“It’s Karen. You have to believe me,” I whimpered.

“I’m sorry you got involved in this. It’s my fault. Karen didn’t even know until she got back from her trip last week,” he said, taking my other hand.

I gave up and said nothing. Karen had had this planned out. She’d lied about her trip. He wouldn’t believe me if I told him it was a lie. I tried to hold back my tears. Why wouldn’t anyone believe me?

“You were almost dead when I found you. I’d thought you were in the bathroom when I didn’t find you in bed. I called your name, but you didn’t answer, so I stood up and went to check, but it was empty.” He paused and released a breath. “I checked your room but didn’t find you. I went downstairs and found the back door open. I saw your body floating in the pool when I came out. You were almost dead.” Tears glistened in his eyes.

I couldn’t believe that witch had dumped my body in the pool.

“Do you know how it felt, watching the doctors trying to revive you, trying to bring you back? I thought I had lost you.” A tear escaped from his left eye and rolled down to his chin.

I was in tears too. He leaned closer to my face. He wiped my tears away with his thumbs and kissed my eyelids.

“I’m so sorry, Chloe,” he whispered.

I moved my IV-connected hand and wiped the tear that had escaped from his eye.

“We’ll catch whoever this monster is, I promise.”

It’s Karen!I wanted to scream.

“Now, will you eat something?” he asked, sitting back on his seat.

I wished he’d believe his enemy was closer to him than he thought. I had to figure out another way to expose her.

“Yeah.” I nodded.

“I was going to force you anyway,” he said, emptying the contents of the bag.
