“Noted. They don’t believe you at all? Even yournovio?”

“No one ever believes me. Well, except you.”

“The doctor told us you will have a hard time recalling what happened and you might make up something.”

“That’s stupid.”

“I’m so happy to see you. When the doctor confirmed you were almost dead and he couldn’t save you, I almost passed out. It was as if I’d lost my other half. Your boyfriend went crazy and tried to beat up the doctor. He had to keep trying till they got a response. It was chaotic that night. Butgracias a Dioshe did,” She sighed in relief. She squeezed my hand softly as she whispered, “We’ll expose that wretch. We’ll find a way.”

“We will,” I agreed with a smile.

Tristan’s familycame to see me the next day. They brought doughnuts and cupcakes. They stayed the whole afternoon. I was so exhausted after they left. Tristan left with them to get some clothes from the house.

I closed my eyes and tried to sleep. I groaned internally when the door opened. I knew it wasn’t Tristan ’cause he’d just left. I pretended to be asleep.

“Oh, our little princess is having a nap.”

My eyes opened at the voice.

“What do you want?” I asked, glaring at Karen’s evil form. I couldn’t believe I had once been jealous of her.

She took slow steps toward me. Her black stiletto heels made spooky sounds that reminded me of a horror movie. The sly smile on her red lips widened as she stopped in front of me.

“Lucky you, you got another chance to live.”

“I know, right? Your plan failed,” I said with a triumphant smile.

“Not really. As long as everyone thinks you’re crazy, no one is going to believe you. Stop trying.”

“We’ll see about that,” I said boldly.

She laughed briefly, shaking her head. Her large waves bounced over her shoulders. I wished I’d had my phone with me, but it was in the house. Suddenly, the look on her face changed. Her laughter ceased, and she gave me a dangerous look as she stopped next to the bed.

“If you get in my way”—she gripped my hair, pulling it, and I yelped in pain—“I will destroy you. You won’t be alive to see your boyfriend suffer to the point of taking his own life.”

“Stop,” I groaned. I searched for the emergency button with my hand.

“Nuh-uh. I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” she snarled, stopping my hand.

She pressed the IV cannula connected to the back of my palm. I was scared it would break inside my skin.

I screamed in pain. It was unbearable. Every cell in my body wanted me to rip off her head, but I had to be smarter. I had to be patient.

“Last warning, Chloe: stay out of my way.” She let go of me and pulled away.

“What did he do?” I asked, tears blurring my eyes.

“He killed my best friend. He killed both of them.”Killed both of them? Is she talking about Nadia and Fiona?

Her tears spoke far louder than her words. “Stop trying to save him. He is not worth it,” she said, wiping the tears away and smiling. “You don’t know the monster you’re living with,” she added and left the room.

I arched my back in pain. Tears brimmed my eyes as I stared at the back of my palm. Two nurses rushed in, looking alarmed as they approached me to ask questions. I showed them my hand and said nothing.

I had been givena sedative last night, so I could sleep. I didn’t say anything about Karen’s visit. I tried to act normal in front of Tristan. Karen’s words kept replaying in my head. I didn’t want to believe anything she’d said about Tristan killing her best friend.

Tristan had left to get breakfast while I waited for the doctor to show up and do his rounds. The back of my palm was swollen from yesterday. They’d had to move the IV to my other hand. The door opened.

My head whipped to the doorway. My breathing ceased.
