I then tried to call her bodyguard, Joey, but he wasn’t picking up. I’d left him with Carina because I trusted him the most and knew that he would protect her with his life.

The next step was to inform our parents that she was missing.

I dialed my parents’ number and placed them on speaker phone while we raced to throw our clothes into the suitcases and hop on the plane.

“What’s wrong?” they asked in unison.

“Carina’s missing. Her new roommate said she never came home. We’re starting a search, but there isn’t much else to go on right now. I’ll be keeping you up to date, but there isn’t really anything that can be done until we’ve got boots on the ground. Luciano and I are flying back now, and should be there in about four hours.”

“Have you called the bodyguard?” Marco asked.

“Yes,” I answered exasperated. “I generally call people in the middle of the night and worry them because I didn’t try to reach the person I was looking for. Geeze, Dad. She’s missing. What part of that aren’t you getting?” I snapped.

“Let me check into a few things and I’ll call you back.” He completely ignored my tirade and hung up.

I didn’t have time to wait for him and continued to pack all of our stuff as quickly as I could.

Luciano had contacted our guards and was taking care of getting us out here as soon as possible.

Finally, my father called me back as we made our way to the taxi that the front desk had called for us.

“We can’t reach them. I haven’t heard from her or from Joey, but I’ll send out some soldiers to start searching. You know this isn’t the first time that she’s done something like this before,” he said.

“You’re right, but this time is different.” I tried not to yell at him. “She knew that we were being attacked and that’s why there were extra guards. This isn’t one of her stunts, I’m positive. She wouldn’t scare me like this.”

My pulse was beating erratically, and I kept taking in deep breaths. Luciano had his hand on the back of my neck and was rubbing circles, trying to soothe me.

“We’ll be home in less than three hours. I’ll check in again when we’re on the ground.” I hung up as we arrived at the airport. Our connections would have made it easier for us to get straight on the plane with the pre-check on our passports. It also made it easier that it was a private plane.

No matter how hard I willed myself not to panic, it continued to return over and over again the entire way onto the plane.

Poor Luciano tried to reassure me, but it was difficult since he didn’t know the fate of my sister any more than I did. And he wasn’t a liar, he knew this wasn’t okay, and so he wouldn’t say it to just say it. Which I appreciated.

“They will find her. Nobody would be stupid enough to take your sister away. They know the kind of hell that it would rain down upon them.” His hand gripped mine as we ran up the steps to the plane.

“That’s true, but I didn’t think anyone would be stupid enough to kill your father either,” I retorted as I buckled myself into place. Luciano even looked over my seat, to make sure I was buckled in. His overprotective nature was always front and center.

“You’re right.” He frowned. “It doesn’t make any sense. There’s no reason for someone to be doing all of this.”

“We’re missing something. Everyone should fear our families and instead they are targeting them. We need to find out who would have the balls to do this type of thing.”

“Here me out. But are you sure that your father isn’t behind it and is just acting like he’s surprised? I know that he’s your dad, but he has had it out for the Romano family for years.”

I shook my head and reached for my husband’s hand and intertwined our fingers.

“After the things I’ve heard from him in the past two weeks, I wouldn’t put it past him. I hate to say that, especially since it concerns my sister now, but I don’t know. He could.”

Luciano leaned over and kissed my temple.

It was a four hour flight, but it felt more like an eternity. I tried hard to relax, but there was no way to make that happen when I didn’t know what was happening to my sister.

I started sending out messages as soon as our feet hit the ground to all of the soldiers under my command.

“Send them to our home, to school, to the apartments and coordinate with Stefano,” Luciano said.

I tried Joey again and still couldn’t reach him.

We had landed, but I was no calmer than before. In fact, I was more tense because I was close enough to try to find her and see what had happened to her.
