“Okay, but be nice.” He was nice enough to put the call on speaker so Bri could continue to hear it.

Markus questioned her friend. “Tiff, are you in the car?”

“Yes. I’m headed down to see Lukus. He couldn’t get away tonight.”

“Okay. Please tell me you are using your Bluetooth headset.” Dead silence on the other end of the phone. “Tiffany?”

When the silence dragged on, Markus pressed her. “Are you or are you not following the law of Illinois and using a hands-free device to talk on the phone while driving?”

“Dammit, he told you, didn’t he?”

Markus chuckled. “Well, are you? And I’d think twice about lying, young lady.”

“Grrr. I can’t believe this. You’re going to tell him, aren’t you?”

“No. I won’t need to, because you’re going to tell him. Right away. Tonight.”

“But, Markus, no. You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly. Less than twenty-four hours ago you got a ticket for speeding in a construction zone while talking on your cell phone. It’s going to cost you a pretty penny in fines. Lukus asked you to go out and buy a Bluetooth last night. Why aren’t you using it?” Markus asked.

“I forgot to charge it. Markus, please. I promise I’ll use it tomorrow, but I can’t tell him. He’ll… well, he will—”

“He’ll spank your ass.”

The sound of a screaming Tiffany could be heard over Bri’s husband’s chuckle. Several people standing nearby stopped their conversation to look their way. Bri blushed self-consciously, but Markus was oblivious to their growing audience. He seemed to be enjoying himself entirely too much. Brianna had to remind herself that her best friend hadn’t exactly gotten used to the idea of dating a guy who wouldn’t hesitate to spank her.

“I can’t believe this. How did you know?” Tiff said eventually.

“Well, I have a secret for you. Lukus has been calling me for advice as often as you have been calling my wife. So, let me give you some advice. I’ll tell you what I told him. Stop trying to analyze this to death. He likes you, a lot. You like him, a lot. You may come from different backgrounds, but not as different as you may think. I am in a unique position of knowing you both very well, so I’m telling you to trust him.”

“But, what if I get my heart trampled on?”

“And, what if you don’t? What if you walk away and never know? Now, it’s time you stop talking on your phone and focus on driving. Got that?”

“Yes,Sir.” Tiffany’s signature sass was coming through loud and clear with her short answer.

“I’d be careful. That attitude is going to get you into trouble.”

“Oh believe me, it already has. Several times.”

Markus chuckled. “Yes, I heard all about that, too. For what it’s worth, Lukus feels as off-base as you do.”

“Really?”

Bri heard hope in her best friend’s voice.

“Really. I’ve known Lukus for going on fourteen years now, and I’ve never seen him like this.”

“Thanks, Markus. I feel so much better now after talking with you and Bri.”

“You’re welcome, Tiff. Now, seriously. Stop calling my wife. You will see her tomorrow afternoon, and I’m planning on keeping her very busy between now and then.”

Brianna caught the look of longing in her husband’s eyes as they locked their gaze. The room began to feel warm from the lustful look on his face.

“Hello, you guys still there?” Tiffany’s voice brought them back to the moment.

“I’ll talk to you tomorrow, Tiff. Just try to have fun tonight, okay?” Brianna said.
