“Just some aches from some really good loving. But stop looking at me like that. I’ll never be able to walk today if you get started again. So I’m going to go make some coffee.”

“Walking is overrated,” I called, going to the dresser then pulling out some boxers and dragging them on.

Smirking, I followed her into the kitchen, watching the sway of her hips and listening to the rapid thumping of her heart as she got worked up by me. In the kitchen, she went immediately for the drapes over the slider. I raced past her and yanked them back shut.

“Did…did you just hiss?” she gasped, backing away with her hand over her heart. Her eyes were wide, but she didn’t look afraid, just startled.

“No.”

“Okay…” She dragged out the word as if she totally didn’t believe me.

Shit. I needed to work harder at being normal.

“I got stuff to make a country breakfast. How many eggs do you want?” she asked, turning away to pull out the frying pan. It scraped across the burner grate as I pulled her into my arms and reached to pry loose her grip on the handle.

“None. I’m only hungry for you,” I growled into her neck. Parched. I craved a taste of her. I couldn’t. Still, I pushed back her robe and nipped her shoulder over the mark I’d left, taunting myself. Opening my mouth, I sucked in a breath and filled my lungs with her essence. It would stay a long time since I’d discovered I barely needed to breathe. Fuck. WhatwasI now?

Avery giggled, flattening her hands on my chest. “Don’t you need to go to work?”

Since I was probably fired for ditching my assignment in Vegas, involuntarily as it had been, no. I was definitely fired. As soon as I got my phone replaced, I’d check my email. I’d need to get a new laptop, too. I’d deal with that later. Thankfully, I had the cash in the bank to cover it. That had been the whole reason for working so many hours—creating a nest egg that we could use to buy a house.

“No. No work today. You’re the only task on my agenda.”

“Task? That hardly seems flattering.”

Cupping her face, I brushed my lips over hers. “You’re everything.”

Her tongue darted across her lips before she dragged the bottom one between her teeth. Her eyes shone. I loved making her happy.

“I do have to go to work today,” she said when I lifted her and settled her on the edge of the dinette table. Her arms wrapped around my shoulder, not pushing me away while I stepped between her legs and yanked her robe out of the way.

“I’ll be gentle.”

She dampened her lips again and looked up at me through her lashes. “Not too gentle. I want tofeelyou. I missed you.”

“Whatever my princess wants.” I kissed her hungrily. Diverting her from food with sex worked perfectly. I couldn’t get enough of her. But every thrust, reminded me how much I needed to taste her coppery essence on my tongue. It called me to bind her to me—and I didn’t even know what that meant. We were already bound. We were married for fuck’s sake.

My soul didn’t care. All I heard wasmine, mine, mine!

Chapter Four

~ Avery ~

I smiled at Mr. Johnson, one of my regular customers, while I refilled his coffee. The older gentleman came in every afternoon for nearly a full carafe’s worth of joe and a big slice of double chocolate cake.

“How’s the puzzle today?” I asked him, nodding toward the newspaper’s crossword before him.

“Too easy. I’ll have it done before I’m halfway through my slice.” He winked and patted the front of his jacket. “It’s okay, though. I brought an extra.”

“Well, that’s good. I’ll be back ‘round in a little bit.” Still smiling, I headed back to the coffee maker to start a new pot then grabbed the one already waiting, ready to start my circuit through my customers. Not that I wanted to. I loved my job, more than most people would think I would. To them, I was only a waitress, a deprecation that I occasionally repeated in my own speech, but truly, I loved feeling like I made a difference in some people’s days.

But this afternoon, there were a lot of weird men here. And every time I glanced their directions, they were staring at me. Unsettling. More unsettling than I’d already been experiencing. Just as I knew something was off with my husband, I felt something equally sideways here today.

On my way to work, I’d realized Jared and I had made love more times than I could count since he’d returned home. Not once had we used protection. That was fine with me, but he’d always wanted to wait until later to have kids. And I still wasn’t settled on us. He seemed all in for our relationship, but…for how long?

I shouldn’t try to analyze that. I was getting exactly what I’d always wanted.

“Hon, are you okay?”
