“No!” Sam stepped in between us, pushing Amara back and guiding her toward the chair across from me. “No, no, no. We’re not doing that again. We are getting back on track. Then, you two can have hanky-panky time.”

Amara scoffed, looking away from me, her cheeks burning bright. She tried to subtly wipe the sweat off her forehead, but I was watching every move she made. I could tell her internal freakout was building again, so I decided to humor her and give her a way to change the subject. “So, what happened Amara? Where did Jack take you and how did you get away?” I asked.

Amara’s shoulder lowered as she sagged in literal relief at my changing the subject. She took my suggestion and ran with it, shifting to get comfortable in her seat. “Well, is everyone up to date on how Jack got in here?”

“No,” Jake raised his hand in response. Amara smiled and rolled her eyes.

“Alright, well, let’s start from the beginning then,” Amara said. Luke, Sam, and Jake all sat down at the chairs around the table. As soon as they were all seated and comfortable, Amara released a sharp breath and leaned back in the chair.

“Jack got through the barrier when we did - he had plenty of time to sneak in when Dean and Luke got into that fight over Sam slapping me,” She explained. I was ashamed. Amara’s pain and everything that had happened to this pack was because of me. My anger was to blame for all of this. I pulled my hands off the table and dropped them into my lap, clenching my fists. I clenched my jaw and vowed silently to myself that I would never be the cause of such pain and destruction again. My wolf pushed forward, wanting to do what he could to make up for the mistakes we caused. I cleared my throat, shifting in my seat and pushing my wolf back down.

“He ended up bunking in one of the abandoned huts near the back of the town. When I came back from my vision walking with the Goddess, Sam and I were greeted by Jack. He attacked us both, with Sam trying to protect us. Unfortunately, he was better and ended up hurting Sam. He smacked me across the face and I blacked out,” Amara explained. My fists tightened and my knuckles cracked in the silence that surrounded the kitchen. Amara frowned at me in disapproval. Luke looked as pissed as I did, while Sam stared at the kitchen table.

“I’m so sorry,” Sam whispered, tears starting to fall. Luke reached over and covered her hand, squeezing it tightly. Amara shook her head, giving Sam a patient and loving smile.

“Sam, you have nothing to apologize for. You did your best and without you, I would have been in Jack’s hands a lot longer. You were amazing. I only wish you didn’t have to go through it because I know how hurt you were,” Amara responded. I narrowed my eyes at her.

“Wait, how do you know how hurt she got?” I asked. Amara raised an eyebrow at me, giving me a questioning look. I crossed my arms, waiting. I wasn’t going to give her the option not to answer. I needed to know everything that happened.

Amara sighed, looking regretful, but resigned to explain everything. “I will get to that part. I kind of need to go in order of what happened for everything to make sense.”

“I’m not letting you get out of answering the question.”

“I’m not trying to get out of answering it. I just said I would. I need to explain other things first for my response to make sense,” Amara snapped.

“Uh huh.”

“Dean, if you want answers, you’re going to need to remain silent because I don’t have the energy for you. Got it?” Amara said. I opened my mouth, intent on riling her up some more, just to see the fire in her eyes. I didn’t get the chance because Jake slapped his hand across my mouth.

“He’ll be quiet. Go on with your story, Amara,” He said. I nipped at his hand, letting my wolf bleed through just a bit. Jake yelped, pulling his hand back and staring at the small cuts on his palm. He looked up at me with disbelief. I winked, grinning at his shock that I would nip at him.

“I seriously need to look into a muzzle for you,” Amara rolled her eyes at me. My mouth dropped open in shock.

“You wouldn’t dare!” I exclaimed.

“We would,” Luke countered, seeming amused. Amara giggled behind her hand, her eyes dancing with amusement and enjoyment. I smiled at her, enjoying how happy she looked. She lowered her hand down slowly, letting me see her beautiful smile. My heart skipped a beat and my palms started to sweat with the impact of her smile. I had no idea she could look so perfect.

Sam groaned, then snapped her fingers in front of our faces. “Earth to horny people! Can we finish this story already? Some of us need to get some sleep at some point.”

Amara blushed again, looking slightly embarrassed but pleased at herself. She shifted to turn her attention to Sam and began her story again. “When I came to, Jack had me strapped to a metal table in the middle of a room. I had no idea that we were still in town, since he hkept me away from the windows and I was mostly staring at the ceiling.”

Amara paused, averting her eyes and taking a steadying breath. I saw flashes of pain sweep across her eyes before she buried it deep. I abruptly stood, grabbed the back of my chair, and walked around the table, dropping the chain down next to Amara. I dropped into the seat and gripped Amara’s hand, squeezing it gently to let her know I was there for her. She gave me a grateful smile.

“From there, it was a blur. For the most part, it was just a wash of pain,” Amara said, her voice low and hesitant. My wolf immediately pushed forward, ready to kill Jack in the worst, longest way possible for daring to hurt his mate. I felt a slap on my arm and blinked, looking over at Amara. Her face was contorted in pain and her eyes were filled with a bit of panic and worry. I looked down and realized I was squeezing her hand tightly. I immediately let go and put my hands in my lap.

“I’m so sorry, Amara. I didn’t realize what I was doing,” I said, my voice breaking. I closed my eyes as shame and anger at myself washed over me. I had already broken my vow not to cause any harm to Amara.

I was not fit to be Amara’s mate.

Amara

Dean stood up, the chair behind him falling over. He looked completely freaked out and miserable. I glanced at Sam and Luke, hoping they understood what was happening. They both looked as confused as I felt, so I turned back to Dean, watching him push his hands through his hair. He stumbled back a few steps, almost falling over the chair that was laying on its side beneath him. He turned and basically sprinted out of the room, pulling the front door open.

Luke was already out the door before I got halfway there, but Sam was right behind me. I stopped on the little porch, gripping the railing and looking at Luke and Dean. Luke was whispering intently into Dean’s ear, while he had his head down, looking miserable. He looked like he had given up on everything he had been working for and it broke my heart to see him that way.

I didn’t really know what I was feeling or what was going on between Dean and I - even though everyone already seemed to know - but I knew that seeing him hurt like this made me so upset and uncomfortable. I felt like if I didn’t go over there and help him in some way, I was going to die - probably a bit dramatic, I wasn’t actually going to die, but it felt that way.
