“It’s been a week,” Noah replied.

Daniel chuckled. “I wish I could tell you it gets better, but you have several years to go.”

I grimaced. That only had me leaning even more toward not going to college.

Tessa asked the guys about the match we put together as Daniel made his way toward me.

“Can we talk?” His low tone made it clear it was something he only wanted me to know about.

I nodded and quietly followed him down the hall to the office. This was beginning to be all too familiar, and my nerves surfaced as he closed the door. My body seemed to know this room meant bad news.

He sighed and took his normal seat. “You’re free to share this information, as always, but I wanted to give you the choice of what to tell the guys.”

“Thank you.” I did appreciate that he thought of that. Sometimes I needed time to process the news on my own, but in the end, I always ended up telling the guys.

“The team found evidence that confirms Juliet’s affiliation with the AS.”

A gasp escaped before I could think to stop it.

“I know you were hoping for the opposite, we all were.” He dropped his gaze to the carpet between us.

“What does she do for them? Does she have an ability? Does she know about mine?” I had a million questions, but those were the most pressing.

“I don’t know the extent of her involvement yet. We’re having trouble breaking into their systems, so we don’t have access to her full file yet. I will let you know as soon as we do.”

“What’s a full file?”

“We haven’t gathered enough information about her to draw any solid conclusions. Just pieces. I prefer to have a more solid history, as well as present contacts and allegiances. We still have work to do on that front.”

I sighed and fell back into the chair. “What do I do?”

“For now, I recommend avoiding her as much as possible. You can stay here if you need to.”

“Thanks. Dad’s been staying in the city a lot more lately, so that probably won’t be necessary. I’ll try to convince him to stay there this weekend too.” Not that I was planning on being home, but I didn’t want to risk running into her. How would I act? How could I be around her and pretend things were normal?

I couldn't. Not after this betrayal. She was working against us, against me.

“How soon until we know more?” Was Dad in danger? Was I? She had a key to the house. If she was really after me there was little to stop her.

“I’m not sure. I can’t guarantee anything, but we are working on it.”

I watched him closely, trying to decipher if he was keeping anything from me. Part of my training was learning to read people and look for signs of lying. Then again, he had the same training and was much more experienced than me. He knew how to cover up exactly what I was looking for.

“Okay, thanks for letting me know.” It was only a piece of the story, but it was more than I had before. Juliet wasn’t who she appeared to be. She was lying to us, but I had to know exactly how much. Were her feelings for Dad real? Or was that a ruse to get close to me? That didn’t make sense. She would likely insist they were home more often if that was her goal.

It was all so confusing. I didn’t know what to think yet.

He nodded and stood, so I followed him out, grateful for the chance to mull all he told me over in my head before letting the guys know.
