I was surprised he even knew it was the last week of school. I hadn’t mentioned it. “How did you know?”

He thought about it for a second. “I think Juliet mentioned it. You know she pays better attention than I do.”

Or she’s hooking up with a guidance counselor. That was a slip I’m sure she was grateful Dad hadn’t noticed.

“I only had one in world history. It was fine.” Luckily, I was prepared for all the questions. It mostly focused on our last two units, so the information was fresh in my mind.

“You’ll be done on Wednesday?” he asked.

“Yeah.” Was this another Juliet fact? Why didn’t he suspect anything? I wanted to tell him that she was an insane cheater, but I didn’t think that was something you sprung on someone in a fast-food place.

I shouldn’t have been relieved to put off the conversation we needed to have. He needed to know who she was and that I was leaving in less than three weeks, but now wasn’t the time.

Before I finished my last fry, he was up and clearing the table. “Sorry to rush out, but I’ve got to get back to the city. I’m getting drinks with some colleagues from the LA office.”

I didn’t bother arguing or complaining. “Can you come home sometime this week?”

He was reading something on his phone when he agreed, so I waited until I had his full attention.

“Maybe Thursday?” I wanted him to commit and be accountable if he forgot about me again.

He hummed and typed something before turning to me. “Thursday? Sure.”

I almost rolled my eyes but stopped myself. “I’ll see you then.” I gave him a hug and left him to his phone while I walked out.

On the drive back home, I went over what tests I had tomorrow. Periods three and four, world lit and biology. I finished the last novel I’d forgotten about and just needed to review my notes about the previous ones from this semester before tomorrow. Luca and I finished the study guide for biology last week, and I was comfortable with the information. I didn’t think I needed to cram in another study session tonight. Instead, I decided to relax.

When I got home, I grabbed a lavender-flavored water before filling my tub with enough bubbles, bath bombs, and salts to turn the water solid pink. I undressed and stepped into the hot water with a sigh and slipped under until my shoulders were submerged.

The music I had playing from my phone stopped after two songs, and I dried off one hand to check it.

Vince was calling. I answered, connecting as a video. “You have the most incredible timing.”

He grinned. “My spidey senses were tingling.”

I was beginning to believe him. “What’s up?”

“I wanted to know if I could come over, but I can see you’re busy.” He paused. “Actually no, I still want to know if I can come over.”

I laughed. “Gavin would see you, and we’d both get in trouble.”

He scoffed. “We can say we’re studying.”

“For what? We don’t have any classes together besides weights, and that was today.” Not that we had a final. We didn’t even have to change into gym clothes since we did our progress check-ins last week.

“We’re both in Algebra.”

“I don’t think he’d believe that.” I shifted and rose a bit more out of the water. His eyes followed the movement, but only the very tops of my shoulders were visible.

“Too bad.” He pouted. “I’m outside, and I miss you. We haven't had any time together for a while.”

“You’re outside?” I looked at his background and made out what looked like a car window.

“Yeah, I borrowed my mom’s car. I even parked down the street like a sneak so Gavin wouldn’t find out.”

I burst out laughing. “Let me dry off, and I’ll let you in.”

“Okay, I’ll meet you at the backdoor.”
