Chapter 5

Standing in Mrs. Hedgings’ office in a wedding dress felt more than a little wrong. Being back at the school made it seem like the past hour hadn’t happened.

The guys wore their suits, and my mentor beamed as she took us in. “Well, done. Now, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to keep your bond a secret from most of the school, but try to be discreet for as long as possible.”

“How can we hide it if we’re living in the other dorms?” Sai asked.

“The tunnels,” Niall answered. “We can use them to go to our classes or to go back to the boys’ and girls’ dorms then leave from there.”

“Almost everyone else will be using them in the next few weeks anyway.” Theo shrugged out of his suit coat. “I doubt anyone would notice if we start using them sooner.”

Mrs. Hedgings looked us over. “You should probably change before leaving.”

Before I could say that I didn’t bring any other clothes, a nicely folded stack appeared behind each of us.

She winked, then left the room.

The guys removed their jackets and shirts without thought, but I stood frozen. They were going to undress in front of me?

I understood shifters didn’t have much of a sense of modesty, but I sure did. There weren’t very many options of where I could go for privacy.

“Here.” Kaden came to my side wearing jeans and a long sleeve shirt that clung to his broad shoulders and thick arms. “I’ll hold this up.”

He picked up a blanket from the closest sofa and held it up like a curtain. It wasn’t a perfect solution, but it was better than stripping down in the open.

“Thanks,” I attempted to reach back, stretch, and contort to undo the buttons along the back, but failed. “Kaden?”

“Hmm?” He didn’t move the blanket or peer over it.

“I can’t get the buttons,” I admitted.

He tucked the blanket under one arm and moved behind me. His fingers brushed along my skin, and a shiver went down my spine, but he didn’t say anything as he quickly worked them all open. His hands rested on my waist for a moment before he released me and held up the blanket again.

It was over in less than a minute, but my heart pounded against my chest. That was the most intimate contact we’ve had, and I didn’t expect to react to him. I thought it would take more time, but my body didn’t seem to need it.

I pushed the thoughts of him and his hands out and quickly dropped the dress and pulled on the jeans, bra, and plaid button-up from my pile.

When I was done, I tugged on the corner so he could lower it, then sat down to pull on my black Converse.

“Thanks,” I held his eyes and a smile tugged at his lips.

The others were finished dressing, and their suits were gone. “What did you do with your clothes?”

“Sent them back to our rooms,” Niall explained. “I can send yours back.”

“No,” I blurted. I didn’t want it to show up on my bed or poke out of my closet. Natasha might know about the bond, but that was different from shoving the evidence in her face. The less she thought about us, the better.

“To mine then?” he asked, and I agreed.

A few moments later, a knock sounded at the door. “Are you all presentable?”

“Yes,” Sai called back, and Mrs. Hedgings returned with a man I didn’t recognize.

His greasy black hair hung past his ears, framing black-rimmed glasses. He wore a comic book T-shirt over khakis.

“This is Professor Rosen. He runs the Space magic department.”

He gave a small wave. “Mrs. Hedgings made me aware of the housing shortage for a group of your size, and I offered to have a look to see how we might make it more comfortable.”
