Sai
“She’s seizing!” Maria ran past me into the room. I spun around to see Saige convulsing on the table.
Oh shit. Oh shit.
I ran over to her, but two more healers crowded in and pushed me out of the way.
What was happening? She was supposed to be getting better. Her symptoms changed suddenly. I should have gotten Maria sooner. I should have realized something was wrong.
An intern gave me an apologetic smile before shutting the door in my face.
They were closing me out? Why? What was going on?
She was fine. She just had a cold.
What changed?
The potion.
Did Maria give her the wrong one? Too much?
I doubted it. She was one of the head healers for the clinic.
Whatever was wrong, they would help her. She was in the best possible place right now. At least this didn’t happen in class. The staff was right here. Already treating her.
She was going to be okay.
The image of her body shaking, her eyes closed, unresponsive.
It was too much.
I stared at the door for what felt like hours until it finally swung open. The interns filed out, leaving Maria next to the table. She waved me in.
“Is she okay?”
Her previous smile was gone. Worry streaked her face. “Was she displaying any other symptoms? Anything other than a cold?”
I shook my head, but I couldn’t be sure. “Last night, she was fine. She went to sleep and woke up like this.”
She made a note on her tablet then crossed her arms, hugging it to her chest. “The potion didn’t have the effects it should have.”
Obviously.
I dropped my gaze to Saige. She was lying motionless on the table, her legs still bent at the knee, hanging over the end.
“Why isn’t she awake?”
Maria hesitated. “We believe she was cursed.”
I nearly snorted. “A curse? Those are banned here. There’s no way anyone could have done that.”
There were blockers and barriers and spells in place to stop anything nefarious like that happening here, even by accident.
But we hadn’t only been at school.
