“How long would it take for signs to show from the time of the curse?”

She shook her head. “It depends on the strength of the curse, the witch who cast it, and the victim. Anywhere from seconds to weeks. Longer, if it was linked to some sort of trigger.”

That had to be it. But who would want to hurt Saige? Only our families were there. I wasn’t sure I could tell the healer that.

“We can monitor her and treat her symptoms, but without knowing what the curse was, we can’t reverse it.”

“She would stay like this?” I stared down at Saige’s peaceful face and felt ill.

“Yes,” Maria confirmed.

“For how long?” Was this permanent? Would it wear off?

“She could stay like this forever.” She paused. “Or she could continue to get worse . . .”

I understood what she left unsaid. She could fade away. Die.

I refused to accept that. Not after we just got her.

“How much time does she have?” Do we have?

“There’s no way of knowing at this point. We’ll have to monitor her and track any changes. I’ll have her moved to a room upstairs.”

Long-term rooms. For students, that took longer than a few minutes to cure. They were meant for a night or two, not indefinitely.

“I’ll have one of the interns let you know when she’s settled and bring you to her.”

I nodded and walked out to the waiting room in a daze.

We were just talking. She was laughing. Then everything changed.

It happened so fast, but what if I noticed it sooner?

The sudden heat. The dizziness.

I should have known. I should have seen it coming. I should have gotten a healer.

As much as I wanted to continue to beat myself up, I didn’t have time to waste. I needed to gather the guys. I needed to talk to Ms. Chronis and Mrs. Hedgings.

Unless.

Could one of them be behind it?

Who could I trust?

I didn’t want to think it was any of the guys, or the two instructors Saige was closest to, but right now, the only person I could eliminate was me.

Hell, my own parents were at the ceremony, and I wasn’t willing to cross them off the list of suspects.

But I couldn’t do this on my own.

The guys would know something was wrong when neither of us showed up for classes by lunch. They’d come looking for her.

None of them would hurt her. It would be the same as hurting ourselves. I had to believe that.

I pulled out my phone and sent them a group message.

Sai: Meet at the health clinic. ASAP
