“They are not hybrids in the first penta-bond seen in centuries.” His voice was louder, and I assumed he’d turned around to face me.

“That doesn’t make them less worthy of protection,” I argued.

“No, but it makes them a much lower priority.”

My protest bubbled up again, but he spoke before I could. “My team will watch the Academy. If it ever becomes necessary, they’ll remove your friends.”

I didn’t believe him. I had no reason to trust this man. I didn’t know him, and his claims of being my family didn’t mean much. Actions did.

“You would help a witch, vampire, badger shifter, and mountain lion shifter? Simply because your granddaughter asked?” Niall asked, blunt but calm.

The Alpha didn’t respond, but I felt Nancy’s subtle shift.

No. He wouldn’t,I told Kaden and Sai, hoping one of them could reach Niall and Theo.

“Your phones?” Nancy asked expectantly. I handed mine over, then the guys followed one by one, reaching their arms around and knocking into me.

“Ouch.” I rubbed my head.

“Sorry,” Kaden murmured.

“Once we cross the border, you will not be allowed to leave,” she continued.

Niall interrupted immediately in a challenging but genuinely curious tone. “How can you stop us?”

“We put a protection spell in place. Only patrolling guards have amulets that allow them to pass through. Everyone else must request permission, get approval, and have arrangements made.”

“But anyone can get in?” Sai asked.

“No, not only are there guards at the only vehicle entrance, but the spell works in both directions,” Nancy explained.

“How––”

“Magic, Sai,” Niall snapped before he could even finish his question.

“So, no phones and no leaving? Are we assigned to a specific cell block? Will we pick up our orange jumpers on the way?” Theo asked dryly.

“This isn’t a prison; nor are you prisoners,” Alpha Stewart replied. “These rules are in place for your protection. We’ve asked the same of the pack. They’ve turned in all cell phones and non-vital communication devices to make sure word of your arrival and whereabouts remains a secret.”

Kaden crossed his arms. “So you don’t trust your pack?”

“I trust them implicitly. I did this to make you feel safe, to give you time to come to trust them as well.”

“Please, if I may finish before we arrive––” Nancy sounded a bit desperate. She obviously wanted to get her job done.

No more questions. Let’s just hear all of them without picking them apart.

Mumbled agreements came into my mind, and I nodded for her to go on.

“While wolf packs don’t follow the human ideas of an alpha and beta role of leadership, we do still have a unique governing system in place, but it's based on lineage and gifts.”

My heart dropped. Lineage? If my grandpa was the leader, would they expect me to take over one day?

“Before you completely lose it,” he interrupted, “you are quite far down the line of succession.”

Can he hear my thoughts?

No, but he likely heard your heartbeat racing,Sai explained. I relaxed a fraction.
