“I’m serious. There’s a reason the five of us are together. We all have something unique to contribute. Just because you don’t have your resources here doesn’t mean you’ve forgotten everything you’ve learned. You’re the smartest person I know.”

“Thanks, man.”

He kept staring at the carpet. I waited until he looked up before continuing.

“The most important thing right now is to support one another. We’re all struggling in different ways, but none of us is alone.”

He swallowed and met my eyes. “You’re right. Sulking won’t accomplish anything.”

“I’m not saying transitioning here isn’t hard, but you’ve got the four of us to lean on.”

Some tension eased from his shoulders. “I think it’s my turn to be there for you all too. I haven’t done enough of that, and it’s not fair.”

“No one is keeping track. We do what we can when we can.”

He nodded and stood. “You’re right.”

Without explanation, he left the room, and I finally had a moment to relax. I stretched out and closed my eyes when the door opened again.

“We’re back!” Kaden called, and I threw my arm over my eyes.

Chapter 8

This didn’t feel right. I looked around. Confusion overwhelmed me.

I didn’t know this place. This bed. This room.

What happened?

Had I been taken in the night?

I sat up. Movement next to me jerked wide awake.

Someone was here.

I moved to the edge of the bed, and another person sat up.

“Saige?”

The sudden sound made me jump, and I rolled off the bed, landing on my back on the floor and scrambling to get my feet under me. I backed away until I hit something. A couch.

“What’s going on?”

Another one. He appeared from the wall, staring at me.

“Saige?”

How did they know my name?

I had to get out. I had to get away.

I searched for exits, but my thoughts jumbled. Where could I go? This was all wrong.

“Saige, relax.” His voice was calm, but his hands were up, coming for me.

He wanted to hurt me. I knew that.

I sniffed, searching again for the fastest way out. That's when I saw another. Three of them now. All staring at me.
