“Shit! Warn us next time, you ass.” Sai clutched his chest.

Theo smirked, staring at his creation. He was in control. I could sense that, and I wanted to push for more.

“Kaden, think you can add some spin?” I asked.

His eyes flashed to mine. “A little fire tornado?”

I grinned, and Joey clapped. “Genius! The power is still within your bond, so Kaden you’ll want to open yourself and accept the extra flow.”

Kaden closed his eyes for a few seconds until a smile pulled at his lips. He tilted his head up, watching as the top of the flames curled before beginning to rotate. In one smooth motion, the flames stretched toward the ground, spinning into a terrifying vortex.

Sai whooped, and I shook my head. It was magnificent.

“Amazing.” Awe filled Dustin’s voice.

The sight of Saige with her arms at her sides, staring at the flames with tears rolling down her cheeks, burned away my grin.

I hurried to her, holding her shoulders. “Saige? What's going on? What's wrong?”

She blinked a few times, but the tears continued. “We might actually have a chance.”

Sai

Iturned the ratchet around the faucet one more time to make sure it was on as tight as possible before putting the tool back in the small bucket Rodney gave me for jobs like this.

“Thank you so much.” The elderly woman tried to hand me a dollar bill.

“It's no problem, Mrs. Bearclaw. I'm glad I was able to help.”

“You did a fine job, young man. Thank you.” She opened the door, and I stepped out into the cold, searching for Saige back toward the main lodge. Instead, Niall paced the porch.

It wasn't unusual to find him deep in his own mind when he was trying to solve a problem, but I hadn’t seen him like that since we left the Academy. I jogged across the street and up the stairs. He didn’t bother looking up until I was directly in front of him.

“Oh, hey.”

“Hey.”

He tried to sidestep me, but I put my hand on his shoulder to stop him. “What's going on?”

He sighed and ran his hands through his already messy hair. “I'm not sure what to do.”

“About what?”

He raked his teeth over his bottom lip. Yeah, he was really worked up, and it was freaking me out.

“Talk to me.”

Finally, he stood still. “I noticed a weird pattern on the community message board. I've spent the past few days at work trying to figure out if there was a hidden code or if I was just going crazy. I think I finally cracked it.”

“Well, that's good, but obviously, the hidden message wasn't.”

He leaned against the wooden logs of the structure and dropped his head in both hands. “No, it's not good. I'm pretty sure it's really, really bad.”

“What are you talking about? What does it say?”

“If I'm right––”

“Which you probably are.”
