He ignored me. “Someone told a neighboring pack about us being wanted by the Council and that Saige and Theo are hybrids.”

I froze. “Are we in danger?”

“I think so. I don't really know yet though. I can't confirm.”

“Have you talked to the Alpha or the elders yet?”

“I mentioned to the Alpha that I saw a pattern, but I hadn't figured it out yet. I literally just cracked it a few minutes ago, and I was coming out here trying to process.”

“Let's go.” I didn’t give him a chance to second guess or to argue. I pulled him inside by the arm and rushed through the lobby and up the stairs to the Alpha’s office. I knocked and was relieved when he called us in.

“Niall. Sai.” He grinned until he took in our expressions. “What's happened?”

He instantly switched into alpha mode, and I was glad he was going to take us seriously.

“I figured out the code,” Niall said without looking at him. “I think we're in danger.”

“What do you mean?”

“Someone leaked the truth about us, and a neighboring pack is upset that you're harboring hybrids.”

He leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms over his wide chest. “The Mississippi River pack?”

Niall nodded.

“I received a message from them this morning requesting to come by for a visit. I don't think it's a coincidence.”

“Nor do I,” Niall sighed.

“This was an amazing catch. Not even our network of spies and insiders has heard anything about this. I won’t to allow them to come. Not until you're confident that your bond is ready.”

“Thank you, sir,” Niall and I said at the same time.

“I don't want to cause a panic, so let's keep this news to only those who must know. You can tell your bond, of course. I'll let the elders know as well as my sons, but beyond that—”

“Understood,” Niall said before he finished.

“Thank you,” I said before putting my hand on Niall’s back and leading him out.

What did he mean when he said he wouldn't let the other pack in? I ignored the nerves rumbling in my stomach. My priority was finding Saige and the other guys and making sure they were safe.

Nothing sounded betterthan a quiet night in with my bond. We needed to take a moment to reconnect, to focus on our connection, and to focus on our relationships rather than on our training. We've come so far, and I wanted to make sure we stayed that way. This shouldn’t turn into a business relationship where we only focused on our abilities and what we could do to help each other.

We had to remember we're a family.

“How are you?” I asked Niall on our walk over. I expected for him to wave off my concern, but I wasn't going to let it happen. “I mean, outside of this emergency, how are you doing? How do you feel living here?”

“It's fine.”

I thought that was all he was going to give me, but he flexed his hands before fisting them again. I waited to see if he was going to say anything else.

“It's just frustrating,” he said, glancing at me. “I know what I'm good at. I know what my strengths are. Not just with my powers and stuff, but what I'm good at within our bond. I'm struggled to do that here, even though things have gotten better with my job. I feel like I'm finally contributing more––”

“And finding secret codes,” I pointed out.

He nodded, staring ahead. “It still doesn't feel like I'm doing enough for Saige or any of us.”

“We’ve been living in fast forward,” I admitted. “Days go by so quickly here. I felt like we had more time at the Academy, if that makes sense. Here it feels like we're all going in five different directions all the time. We're lucky if we can check in on one another at any time besides training.”
