“What's going on?” Saige demanded after several tense, silent minutes.

“There was an attack on the border. The Alpha sounded the alarm as a precaution.”

I locked eyes with Niall, and his face drained of color. “Do you think it was . . .”

He nodded and looked away before I could finish.

One guard’s walkie talkie crackled on his shoulder.

“Henderson, we need you here,” a voice cried out.

He pressed a button. “En route.”

He gave his partner a look before throwing open the front door and running. The other armed guard locked the door behind him and kept pacing, glancing out each window as he passed.

“You need to take these off.” I held up my wrists.

“I’m not authorized to do that,” he replied, not taking his eyes off the window.

“But I need to be able to shift. I need to be able to protect myself and my bond. I won't leave the cabin, but I need to be able to shift.”

“I don't have a key,” he barked back.

“You can break them open or something, can’t you? I'm not the target, but she might be.”

His eyes flashed to Saige before shaking his head. “I can't take them off, not because it's an order. I don't have a way to do it.”

Niall grabbed my elbow and pulled me back.

I stared at him. “I can't do anything with these. I can't help you. I can't strengthen the bond. I can't do anything!”

I was panicking.

“It's fine. We'll be fine.”

“You think I’m the target?” Saige asked in a quiet voice. “Why do you think that?”

There was a pain in Niall’s eyes. He hadn’t wanted to tell her everything, but now was definitely not the time to keep secrets.

“I'm pretty sure this is the Mississippi River Pack. They heard about hybrids being here, and they were upset about it. They basically said they were coming, but the Alpha said he wouldn’t let them.”

“But it’s too late.” I finished for him.

“So they’re here for us?” She looked at the Theo, since he was the only one publicly out as a hybrid.

Niall nodded and stared at her. “We're going to be fine. I promise you'll be just fine.”

I wasn't sure that was one he would keep.

Chapter 22

Screams filled the air, and the guard shifted in the direction of the noise.

“They breached the borders,” he said, mostly to himself, but we were all close enough to hear.

Kaden leaned forward. “We need to do something, create a shield or protection around the house.”

I lifted my wrists. “I can’t use my magic.”
