“No, they said if you don’t come now they’ll do it without you. I’m sorry.” She looks at Cody and back to me.

“I’m sorry. I have to go to this.” I look at Cody, hoping he’ll understand.

“Seriously?”

“I’m at work, it’s not like I’m leaving you for work, but I have to go to this meeting.”

“Willhebe there?” he growls.

“Yes, but only because it’s our case. Please just wait here and we can talk after. I promise.” I lean forward to kiss him but he turns his face, letting me kiss his cheek instead.

I sigh, grab my papers, and all but run down the hall to the meeting. Shutting the door behind me, my bosses glare in my direction.

“Nice of you to join us, Luna,” one of them says angrily. I take a seat and try to pay attention to what they’re saying, but my mind is on Cody and if he’ll be there when I’m done here.

When the meeting is over, I race back to my office only to find it empty. There’s not a sign of him being here or anywhere nearby. I look at Molly, who frowns.

“I’m so sorry, I tried to stop him. He said he couldn’t wait anymore.”

“Did he say where he was going?”

“No.” She shakes her head.

“Cancel my afternoon, I need to find him.” I grab my jacket and head for the stairs.

I try calling him on the way but he doesn’t answer. I leave him a message on the way to Puzzles and hope to find him there. When I get there, it’s packed for lunch but I don’t see anyone I recognize. I head toward the kitchen to get to the offices when someone stops me.

“You can’t be back here,” the man dressed like a waiter tells me.

“I know the owner,” I say, hoping he won’t give me a hard time.

“That’s nice, you still can’t be back here.” He crosses his arms.

“Look, I’ve had a tough day can you please tell me if Sawyer or Cody are back there?”

“Oh,” His face changes when he realizes I actually know the owners on a first name basis. “Sawyer’s in her office.” He steps aside and I walk down the short hallway, making sure to knock first.

“Yeah!” Sawyer calls and I walk in to the smell of smoke and Sawyer trying to put out a cigarette.

“Ah fuck, well don’t tell anyone you saw that.” She chuckles.

“Have you seen Cody?” I ask without the time for pleasantries.

“Yes.” She doesn’t look up from her paperwork.

“Can you tell me where he is?”

“No.” Now she looks at me.

“Sawyer, I just want to talk to him. Please,” I plead.

“Look, I’m not trying to get in the middle of anything, but he asked for some space. He said you might come looking for him and I’m not supposed to tell you where he went.”

“I know you’re his best friend, but please. Did he tell you what happened?”

“Yes. So you can understand why I’m respecting his wishes right now.” She gives me a look and I sigh.

“I fucked up, okay? But I know that and I want to be with him and I just need him to know that. So can you please for the love of God just tell me where he is?” I say angrily.
