“Like you don’t have to do anything for us. We’ve been surviving fine on our own.”

“Of course I want to be involved,” he says angrily.

“Oh.”

“Does that surprise you?”

“No,” I answer honestly.

“I just feel so terrible. You had to go through all of this alone.”

“It’s okay.”

“No, it’s not. I know we’ve had our troubles, but I’m here now. We can work on us and things will be okay.” He smiles.

“I don’t want that.” I stand and walk across the room.

“What? Why?”

“Cody, this wasn’t a decision made lightly. I understand you wanting to be involved, but it doesn’t mean we automatically get back together,” I explain.

“Did you know about the baby when we broke up?” he asks, but I don’t answer.

“Luna.” He repeats his questions and follows me toward the kitchen.

“Yes. I knew.” I try to stop myself from crying as Cody clenches his jaw.

“You knew you were having my baby and you didn’t think to tell me?” he snaps.

“I didn’t want you to come back just for her.” The tears fall and I grab a tissue.

“Her?” His voice cracks and I nod. I hadn’t meant to say it, it just slipped out, but Cody’s eyes drop to my stomach.

“I found out last week.” I pull the sonogram off the fridge and hand it to him. Our hands briefly touch but he’s focused on the picture. His eyes watering as he covers his mouth.

“She’s got your nose.” We both smile. I had thought that too. “Luna.” His eyes have tears brimming and I look away. I don’t look away fast enough because my tears tumble down my cheeks.

“I’m sorry.” I reach for the tissues and wipe them away. “Hormones are a bitch these days.”

“Don’t apologize, it’s okay.” He reaches for my hand, but I flinch and he pulls back.

“I think you should go,” I say firmly.

“Luna, come on.” He looks at me pleading, “I just want to know about her, be involved in this and her life.”

“This is just a lot for one day, Cody.”

“Okay. Then I can come back, but I will be coming back. I want us to talk about this together.”

“Okay.”

“Luna, when can I come back?” He looks at me expectantly.

“I-I’m not sure.” This conversation alone was exhausting, not to mention the day we both had.“Are you back in town?” I ask, realizing I’m not even sure where he’s been living.

“Yeah, I’m at my place and working at Puzzles. We finished the second location, we just haven’t opened up yet,” he explains. I don’t ask if he’s living alone or with the woman I saw him with today. I’d rather not know.

“Ah.” I nod.
