“D-Did your water break?” Cody gasps.

“Oh my gosh, I’m in labor!” I shout realizing what must be happening. I wasn’t in any pain except for slight discomfort but maybe that’s what happens. I knew I should’ve finished reading those parenting and pregnancy books I bought.

“Oh shit, we need to get you to the hospital right?” He looks at me for what to do. At least he wasn’t panicking, I don’t think I could handle that right now.

“Go get me the book, the pregnancy book. Tell me what it says.” Of course I never got to sign up for the labor and delivery classes like I was supposed to. The thought of me going by myself was kind of depressing.

“Book, okay.” He repeats nodding to himself and disappears into the living room. In the meantime I look for some clothes and a way to quickly clean up the mess. I throw the dry sheets on the ground and reach to grab the corner of the wet one when I get a sharp shooting pain in my back.

“Fuck,” I mumble. That must be the labor starting. The pain is short, but I don’t attempt to continue moving so much. I grab an oversized t-shirt, some leggings and underwear and waddle to the bathroom to get dressed.

“Luna? Shit, where’d you go?” Cody calls. I shout that I went to the bathroom and he starts reading out of the book to me.

“You’re saying a lot of words, can you just read to yourself and tell me when I need to get to the hospital?” I say in between the sharp pain as I get dressed.

“Okay.” I hear pages flipping. I open the bathroom door and Cody’s standing right outside reading along.

“Okay, so you can wait until they are a few minutes apart otherwise you might be in labor for awhile. But if your water breaks, that’s a good sign it’s happening soon.” He nods.

“I want some pancakes.” I say before walking back to my room to get a bag packed. Normally I was so on top of things, but this baby seemed to make me a little rattled.I guess that was just the start of parenthood, huh?

“I’m sorry, did I hear you correctly?” Cody follows me and takes the bag from me as I start throwing things I need in it. Brush, clothes, socks, wait, did he say something?

“Yes, I want pancakes.” I say again, after registering what he says.

“You’re in labor.” He states.

“Yes, and I’m hungry. Labor could be hours or days, so I want some food before I’m not allowed to eat.” I glare at him, daring to deny me food while I’m literally giving birth to his child.

“Okay, why don’t I go order it and we can pick it up on the way?” He suggests.

“Good idea,” I pause. “And extra syrup!”

I walk into the nursery which Riley and Sawyer came over to help finish. Everything is ready for her, so I grab a onesie and the outfit I want her to go home in. A little bear snowsuit and matching booties that I picked out. Cody calls my name but I don’t answer. As I stare into the room before me, she kicks and I start to feel that overwhelming feeling again. Could I do this? Could I be a mom? A good one?

“Hey, it’ll be okay.” Cody comes up behind me and wraps his arms around me. Somehow he must know what I’m thinking because he pulls me close. “We can do this.” He whispers.

“We can?” I rub away the tears and look at him.

“We can, but we do need to get going.” He smiles and I nod. The pain had dulled but I didn’t know when it would come back again. Plus I had heard stories about where mother’s were denied drugs if they got there too late. We shut the door behind us, Cody grabs my bag and we head out the door. Knowing the next time we walk through the apartment together, it would be the three of us.

“Did you want to talk about names?” Cody looks down at the baby. She’s sleeping, a soft sigh escaping her lips with each breath. I place a tiny kiss on her forehead and look at him. After a stack of pancakes, a cab ride and ten hours of labor, our little miracle was born.

“Did you have any ideas?” I smile.

“I did, but I didn’t want to overstep.”

“She’s yours too, you should have a say.”

“What about Annabelle?” He says and my eyes start to water.

I nod. “Yes, I think it’s perfect.”

“That way she’ll have a piece of the woman who gave us you.” He smiles. I never thought about naming her after my mother but as soon as he said it, I knew it was her name. It was beautiful, elegant, and perfectly her.

“I love it.” I smile.

“Annabelle…” He pauses. This is the conversation we should’ve had before now. What was her last name?
