“Say it.”

He looks down at me. “Say what?”

“Whatever it is you want to say but aren’t.”

He sighs and shakes his head. “You know I’m not taking sides in this, right?”

I nod as we enter the classroom and sit down.

“I’m not trying to insert myself in your relationship, but he’s struggling, Rae. He had his meeting with the surgeon today and it didn’t go well.”

“Joel mentioned that. What happened?”

“I guess the guy barely looked at him and told him he wasn’t going to do surgery on him. To rely on PT and OT which aren’t helping him. Now Coach thinks he probably won’t be able to play full time. Add in this stuff with you, and he’s a mess.”

He looks down at his desk, not saying anything. He always reminds me of his mom when he does that. It means he has a strong opinion.

I jab my finger into his arm. “What?”

“I know you’re pissed and hurting, but so is he. And I think you’d be the first to admit, he’d show up for you if the roles were reversed.”

“God damn it, Miles.” Because he’s right. If I were struggling and needed Aaron tonight, he’d be there for me, full stop.

But I don’t know how to find the strength to be there for him.

Guess I have one more class to figure it out.

After class, we take our time walking toward my math class.

“You know I’m not trying to upset you, right?” Miles asks.

“I know.”

He gives me a kiss on the cheek and heads to his class. I turn toward mine in time to see Aaron follow Trevor in.

Shoot. I asked Trev to switch seats with me.

I think about turning down the hall and skipping class, but that won’t fix anything. Guess it’s time to go in and deal with whatever drama comes next.

Aaron

As I walk to my row in math, I see Trevor sitting in the seat behind mine. The one Rae usually sits in.

Awesome.I know she was avoiding me in our wellness class, but I let it go since Caity was in that one with me. If Trevor is sitting in her seat, it means he knows. She asked him to do it.

“Why are you sitting there?”

“Because Rae asked me to,” he says, shrugging his shoulders like he knows nothing.

“And if I ask you to switch back?”

“She asked me first,” he says like it’s no big deal.

I grumble right as I hear a throat clear. I turn to see Rae. She flares her eyes at me and nods down the row.

I think about not moving. About pulling her to my lips and kissing her until she gets it. But that’s how we got here. Instead, I slide into my seat and allow her to pass, but once she’s sitting, I pull out my phone.

Me: This is how it’s going to be now?
