Until I look across the dance floor and see Caity and Aaron dancing. His hands are riding low on her hips and her hands are on his arms as she leans in close and kisses his neck.

Tears burn in my eyes.Screw having fun. Nothing’s fun without my best friend.

Making up some lame excuse about getting a drink, I head inside.

In case it still needs to be said, I’m over parties.

Aaron

Caity’s lips brush my neck and I step back.

“Hey, that wasn’t a part of the plan.”

She shrugs. “But it’s working.” She looks over at Aiden, whose arms are crossed over his chest, watching us.

This was stupid from the start and I shouldn’t have gone along with it. Caity and Aiden have had feelings for each other for a while. At least Aiden seems to have them for Caity, too. Trying to have fun with it instead of letting it weigh her down, she tried that TikTok trend where you kiss your best friend. Except he could tell what was happening and got mad at her for it.

Since Rae still isn’t talking to me, Caity thought we could get both of their attention by dancing together. It was stupid of me to go along with, anyway, and kissing my neck is taking it a step too far.

Sighing, I take her hand and pull her aside.

“This has to stop, Caity. Flirting with me might get Aiden’s attention, but it’ll be in all the wrong ways. I shouldn’t have done this. I’ve been desperate for Rae’s attention, but I don’t want it like this, either.”

“But—”

“No. Listen to me. Everything is fucked up between Rae and me. We let the silence go too long. Now we don’t know how to fix it. Don’t do the same thing with Aiden. You still have a chance to get it right. Go talk to him. Tell him the truth. No more games.”No more games.

She tilts her head. “And what are you going to do?”

“Talk to Rae.”

She glances over at Aiden and nods. “Here’s hoping they both listen.”

“Good luck.”

I watch as she walks over to Aiden. She places a hand on his arm—the same way Rae does with me—and he softens. I don’t know what she says, but his eyes widen. She says something else, and his eyes dart to me. Then they’re on her again. She takes both his hands in hers and says one last thing. Then he grabs her and kisses her.

I smile softly and turn away. If only Rae and I could get to that place.

My eyes roll around the party looking for her, but I can’t find her anywhere. Seeing Sarah by the bar, I walk over.

“Hey, where’s Rae?”

She glares at me. “She left the dance floor in tears when she saw Caity kiss your neck.Jackass.”

Fuck.

“Where is she now?”

“I don’t know. Inside, I think. Seemed like she wanted to be alone.”

“So no one went after her?” I yell.

She jams her finger in my chest. “It’s not ours to fix. Stop fucking with her heart and fix it.”

She walks away and my arms drop to my sides. I hate that she’s right. But she is. I’m the only one who can fix this now.

I stalk toward the back door, ready to find her and do what it takes to make things right.
