I’m sitting on the hood of Aaron’s truck, waiting.

This feels familiar.

I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since the state championship game. So much has changed since then, and yet, at the core of it all, it’s still Aaron and me. I didn’t think it would take almost a year for us to get here, but it’s proof you can’t plan life. It would be pretty boring if we could, I guess. Although I wouldn’t have minded a little less drama this last year.

One of the metal doors at the front of the school slams, drawing my attention. Aaron’s eyes are already on me as he makes his way to the parking lot. He quickly says goodbye to his parents before coming over to me. The parking lot is pretty much empty now.

He puts his hands on either side of me and leans in and kisses me.

“So, tell me about this date,” I say against his lips.

“Well,” he says, waving to Joel and Sarah as they pull out of the parking lot, leaving us alone. “After talking the other day about all of ouralmosts—” The other morning, Aaron and I had a conversation about dreams we’d had about each other and all the times we could have crossed the line but didn’t. “I thought we could revisit some of our moments, those times when we almost crossed the line. And it starts right here, right now,” he says, sinking his lips against mine.

Then he’s lying on top of me on the hood and my dream comes flying back into my mind.

And then his hand slips between my legs. My eyes go wide.

“Aaron,” I whisper breathlessly.

He grins at me and looks around. “I know we probably shouldn’t, but I want to. Ireallywant to.”

I shake my head and smile. Because I do too. “Is it always gonna be like this?”

“What?”

“I mean, we’ve done stuff three times today and I know we both want each other again. You think we’ll always bethishorny for each other?” I ask with a laugh.

I’m surprised when he looks at me thoughtfully.

“I’ve never felt like this with anyone else. If you’re asking if we’re like this because we’re young or because this is new, the answer is no. It’s not because of any of that. We want each other because of our love and our connection. That’s never going to change. So, to answer your first question, yes, we are always going to want—need—each other this badly.”

I inhale sharply. Partly because that was a damn good answer. But mostly because I know it’s the truth.

He stands up, grabs my waist, and helps me down off the hood. Then he gives me one more steamy kiss for good measure. “Come on, Beautiful. Let’s get some dinner.”

He helps me into the truck, and we take off for downtown where our favorite food truck,Yo Taco!is parked.

The owner, Manny, a second generation Mexican American in his midforties, smiles brightly when he sees us. “Ah, two of my favorite customers. I heard the baseball game on the radio. Another great game. Hope your hand heals up soon.”

“Thanks, Manny,” Aaron says, trying to hide the flash of pain that rolls over his face.

“Your usual?”

“Sounds perfect.” I smile at him.

He leans in, a twinkle in his eye. “I have churros tonight. On the house for the two of you.”

“You’re too good to us, Manny,” Aaron says, dropping a ten into the tip jar.

“No, I just like seeing my favorite couple happy. Go sit. It’ll be out in a few.”

Manny watched us go from best friends to knowing we were in love to finally being together with as much agony as our friends. He was always sad when one of us would come here without the other.

The day after I had surgery and Aaron brought tacos, Manny sent them along on the house because he loves his regulars. And Aaron and I are definitely regulars.

We take our tacos and our double order of churros—Manny’s doing—and walk down to a picnic table by the river.
