We cuddle up next to each other and look out at the river as we eat.

“So, obviously,Yo Taco!has always been a part of our history, but this is also my sad attempt to capture another memory. I couldn’t exactly afford a flight down to Charleston for the night, but I thought at least we could look out at the moon on the water.”

I rest my head on his shoulder. “I should’ve kissed you our last night there. I know we kissed a little bit the next morning, but that night… I should’ve gone for it.”

He leans down and kisses my head.

“What would you have done if I had?” I ask him. “If I’d crawled on top of you and started making out with you… what do you think you would’ve done?”

He runs his thumb over his lips as he considers it. Then he gives me a naughty smile. “Oh, I’d have kissed the hell out of you. Pinned you to the sand, told you I loved you, and kissed you all night long.”

My mouth almost drops.

Before I can respond, he says, “Something like this.” Then he smashes his mouth into mine. He kisses me recklessly, pulling me onto his lap. There are plenty of other people around, but I don’t even care. I’ve never been so hot and heavy with someone in public, but somehow it doesn’t bother me with him. I have zero shame. If he asked to do something right here on top of the picnic table, I’d probably let him. He does something to me. I lose all control. And clearly, so does he. Which is kinda funny because neither of us were ever like this before. He’s right, it’s our connection and love and the fact that we’ve always had a physical relationship—touching, hugging, snuggling—that drives us.

Eventually, we untangle ourselves, but he’s still grinning at me. A sexy, naughty, troublemaking grin. One that sets me on fire and melts me to my core.

What’s that thing I say?

I’m so screwed.

Literally.

“You all right there?”

“Hmm?” Shit, did he catch me staring?

He leans in and whispers, “You’re practically drooling.”

I bring my lips right up to his ear, so they lightly brush his skin. “Because you’re so sexy, I can’t think straight.”

He lets out a noise that’s almost a growl and kisses me. “Come on, let’s go to our next stop.”

He grabs my hand and leads me back to his truck.

Our next stop happens to be the elementary school playground.

I stop as he leads me across the field toward it.

“Ace…” My lip flips out in a pout.

He turns to me and pokes my lip. “Put that away.” He gently kisses my cheek. “Come on.”

He leads me over to the slide and crawls under, then lays out the blanket he’s carrying and holds out his hand to me.

Crawling underneath with him, I kneel on the blanket, then run my hand across the carving. AC+RM=?

“Where it all started,” I whisper.

He smiles at me. “I’m gonna marry you someday.”

I scrunch up my face, but then smile and say, “Only if you treat me good. And are very sweet. And—”

“The nicest boy ever,” we say at the same time.

“I know I didn’t always get that part right, but I love you. God, I love you so damn much. I remember that day so clearly. Sarah and Hyla were talking about marrying boys. Some of them were from our school, some were celebrities, but they were obsessed with it. I thought it was crazy. Then Sarah looked right at me and said, ‘Isn’t there someone you like? Someone you would want to marry? Who you’d be happy with your whole life?’ I immediately looked over at you. You were conspiring with Joel about something. I watched you, and I knew if I spent every day of the rest of my life with you, I’d be happy. That’s why I carved this, all those years ago.”

Tears fill my eyes. We’ve both made mistakes. But, damn. Our love is incredible.
