She squeezes me back tightly, then she nuzzles her face into my neck, and I will my dick not to harden. One touch from her still fucks me up.

Ilovethat.

When we pull away, she smiles at me. “Does that mean you’re on board? Because I miss hanging out and watching movies and doing homework together every day.”

“One hundred percent on board. I missed you, Beautiful.”

“To that end… I’m trying to keep moving forward with healing. I’m still not ready for a lot, but I was wondering if maybe you wanted to throw it back to old times and be myfakeboyfriend this week and go to homecoming with me.”

Shit.

What the hell do I do with that?

If she was seriously asking me, I’d say yes and cancel with Caity. But that’s not what she’s doing. She’s still not ready for more than where we are. And after a month of not having her in my daily life, I’ll take only her friendship for the rest of my life. Of course, I want more, but—

“Ace?”

Right.

“Well, uh, Caity asked me to go with her this morning, but I can cancel.”

She looks a little sad but gives a soft smile. “No. You can’t cancel on a date for a lame night with your best friend, who has very little desire to even be there.”

I give her arm a push. “It would never be lame with you. You’re the one I’d rather go with.”

She rolls her eyes a little. “Oh, please. Me? And all my drama?”

“Always. Are you sure you don’t want me to cancel?”

She shakes her head, but I see the sadness in her eyes. “No. I’ll be fine.”

As much as I want to choose her over Caity, the fact that she’s telling me not to, that she only asked me to be herfakedate, tells me she isn’t ready for anything else. We should probably avoid blurring the lines too much.

“We’re still taking pictures before and hanging out after. Got it?”

“Yes, sir,” she says with a smirk. “Now, what are you doing the rest of the day?”

“Oh, I’ve got big plans.” Her face falls, until I add, “With you.” Then I get the giant blazing smile that makes my heart hammer in my chest. “I’m thinking Chewie’s, then back here for a movie.”

I throw my arm around her shoulder, but she pulls away.

“I think you should shower first,” she teases, dramatically scrunching up her nose.

I stand up and offer her my hand. She takes it and I pull her up, then wrap my arm around her, pulling her close to my armpit. “I think I’ll shower after we eat. That’ll give you time to pick the movie.”

She looks up at me, eyes dancing and looking happier than she has in months. “Deal, I suppose.” She starts down the stairs and I follow. When our feet hit the sidewalk, she says, “On one condition.”

“What’s that?”

She jumps onto my back, looping her arms around my neck. “Carry me!”

I laugh at that and wrap my arms around her legs.

My heart is full again. No matter what happens from here, at least I have my best friend back. I’ve needed that.I need her.
