Rae and I stare at each other for a moment. Then her gaze drops to my lips. She leans in closer and our eyes lock again. This is it.

“Hurry up!” Joel shouts, breaking the moment.

Rae sighs and steps back.

We exchange one last look, both of us wanting to say so much more.

Instead, I squeeze her hand. “Come on, Beautiful. You can ride with me.”

She smiles and squeezes my hand back as she nods. And I know that nod is affirmation that we’ll continue this later.

I can’t fucking wait.

Rae

We always sled at Aaron’s uncle’s property up in the hills. It’s absolutely gorgeous. We’ve been coming here to sled since we were kids, and I’ve always been enamored by the beautiful log cabin, perfectly maintained wooded trails, and yes, the amazing sledding hill.

The hill comes down from the edge of the driveway, and depending on what part of the driveway you start at, you’ll get different slopes.

Aaron’s uncle has a shed full of sledding equipment. There are sleds and inner tubes and saucers.

Sarah, Mackie, and I all immediately jump onto an inner tube and go careening down the hill.

There is something about sledding that makes you feel like a little kid again, and the three of us are laughing when Joel, Aaron, and Miles come flying down the hill on saucers and almost take us out.

We almost chastise them, but they’re laughing so hard that we start laughing again, too.

We spend the next hour sledding, trying every combination of people on sleds and inner tubes and racing to see who’d get down fastest on a saucer.

For the last few runs, Aaron and I have been together on a long black sled. As we reach the top of the hill to start again, Aaron smirks at me.

He drags me over to the steepest part of the hill and says, “Get on.”

“No way. We’re gonna go flying into the trees if we start here,” I say. “I’d rather not die today.”

He shakes his head.

“We’ll bail out like we did when we were kids.”

I shake my head again, but he sits down on the sled, grabs me by the hips and pulls me down so I’m sitting in between his legs, my back pulled tightly against his chest.

He wraps his arms around me, but, like, lower than at the waist. His hands are on my hip bones. And when I look behind me, he’s smirking at me.

My heart pounds in my chest as I wonder what he wanted to talk to me about before. Why hasn’t he said anything else?

My thoughts are interrupted by Aaron’s warm breath in my ear. “Remember to bail out when I turn the sled.” And I swear he’s saying it in a sexy voice. It’s cold outside, but I suddenly feel like I’m a thousand degrees.

Aaron uses his hands to get the sled going. And then it’s going.Fast. We’re flying over little divots in the snow and catching air.

And I’m freaking out. The woods are coming up quick. Aaron tries to turn the sled, but it flips, and we both end up sprawled on the ground.

Everybody else was already at the bottom of the hill, watching us like we’re nuts.

“You guys okay?” Sarah asks.

Kind of.Landing that hard knocked the wind out of me. But since nothing hurts, I throw my thumbs up.

They all start collecting their sleds and heading back up the hill.
