He gives me a slight nod and I head back into the house. I smack Jamie on the shoulder and lead him over to the bar and open a cabinet. “Since when do you do shots?”

He grins at me over his shoulder. “I’m trying to prepare for college now. Assuming I go to college. I don’t know what I’m going to do if I get drafted next year.”

I open the cabinet full of hard liquor and find some good quality bourbon. I grab two lowballs and put some ice in the bottom before pouring the bourbon over the top. I slide him one. He takes it and looks at me in confusion. “Way better than doing shots,” I tell him with a nod.

I take a sip and he follows suit. He pulls the glass back from his lips and raises his eyebrows in surprise.

“I told ya.” Leaning over the counter on my elbows, I take in his mop of orange hair that Coach has probably given him plenty of shit for. “As for baseball, you’ve gotta follow your heart, Jame.”

He chuckles and shakes his head. “That’s your sage advice?”

“Trust me. Anyone can say those words. It’s harder to actually live it.”

He considers that, but then narrows his eyes on me. “That what you’re doing? You gonna become some big-time college baseball coach?”

My chest vibrates with a laugh. “No. I don’t think that’s my future. I’ve always been more pulled toward high school.”

“But you don’t want to teach?”

“Nope. I’m planning on being the one giving outsage advice.”

He rolls his eyes. “Funny.”

“I’m serious. I’ve already got my classes and major lined up. Starting next year, I’ll be studying counseling. I want to be a school counselor.”

His eyes widen slightly and his face blooms into a huge smile. He looks like a five-year-old when he smiles like that. “That’s perfect for you.”

“It feels right.”

He shakes his head before taking a long sip of his bourbon. “You’ve come a long way.”

“I’m doing okay.”

“Speaking of that, what’s going on with you and Joel?”

I inhale sharply as I walk around the counter toward him. “I’m not exactly sure. But we need to deal with it.”

He nods as we walk back toward the deck. “And you and Rae?”

I blow out a long breath. “I’m getting there,” I say quietly. “I’m getting there.”

Rae

There is nothing like a good bath. Especially in an oversized jetted bathtub. I sometimes forget how well-off Joel’s parents are until we’re at the lake house. This place is fancy as hell and I’m certain it cost well over five hundred thousand. You’d never know how rich they are, because they aren’t the type to flaunt it and they graciously share it with those around them without a second thought.

Today, I’m extra thankful. That bath was heaven sent. I drank some wine, read a book, and used a cotton candy bath bomb that left me smelling like sweet, sexy, sugar. I’m making a—possibly stupid—note to order these in the future. Because theoretically, one day, Aaron and I will be back together. And the scent of these would drive him nuts.

Yeah, I’m staying away from him tonight, so we don’t do anything dumb.

Plus, he needs to make up with Joel.

And it’s girl time.

I swing the door open to the bedroom I’m sharing with Sarah and find all the girls there chatting.

“Ooh, what are we talking about?” I ask, plopping down next to Sarah on the bed.

“We’re figuring out everyone’s Enneagram numbers,” Mackie explains.
