“Oh. That’s easy. I’m a nine.Duh. Aaron’s a two. Miles is a one.”

“Definitely,” Mackie says with a laugh.

I point to Amanda. “I think you are too but with a nine wing. Miles is probably a two wing. Joel’s a seven. Sarah you’re probably a six. And Mackie… you’re the tough one. You might be a nine, too. But maybe a more functional one than I am,” I say with a laugh.

Mackie shakes her head and looks down. “I don’t feel particularly functional lately.”

I reach out and squeeze her hand. “It’s hard.”

She nods slowly. “It’s a weird fucking combination of I miss her and I hate her.” She looks at me. “Tell me it gets easier.”

I bite my lip and tilt my head back and forth. “Ish? I don’t know. I don’thatehim. In some ways, I’m still angry. And I miss him. But then he’s there all the time. It’s confusing. But let’s focus on you and Hyla.”

She grimaces. “Let’s not. I don’t even want to waste my breath talking about her. She clearly wouldn’t for me.”

Poor Mackie. My heart hurts for her. Mostly because I know how it feels to have your heart broken. And to feel like there’s so much left unsaid.

“I like that plan too,” Amanda says, jutting out her chin and crossing her arms over her chest.

Sarah smacks her arm. “You really don’t like her, do you?”

Amanda firmly shakes her head, her long strawberry-blonde hair flowing back and forth. “Nope. You guys became my best friends in like five seconds. You’re all strong and incredible and I love you and I don’t like people who hurt you. I’m annoyed with Aaron, but that’s obviously way more complicated. But Hyla? No. I don’t like her. Pretty much all I’ve seen from her is her being weak or untrustworthy or hurting Mackie. I’m not here for it. I’ll fight her.”

I glance at both Sarah and Mackie who are holding back smiles.

Amanda leans back against some pillows and smiles a wicked smile. “Or we can tell her we’re fucking.” Mackie laughs loudly.

“Thanks, Mands.”

Amanda winks at her, and we all laugh.

Sarah looks at me. “So, what about you and Aaron? How were the stars last night?”

I shrug, not wanting to get into it. Because it’s complicated and I barely know how I feel about it. “I don’t know. It was fine. That’s about the only word I have.” Sarah opens her mouth to speak, but before she can, I say, “How about you and that pre-med guy?”

She half-smiles and shrugs. “Fine.”

It’s quiet for a moment until Amanda loudly says, “Oh my god! Did I tell you about the horror of a girl my brother Pete is dating?”

We all shake our heads and gear up for whatever dramatic story we’re about to hear.

I’m cozy in bed and am just putting my phone away when Sarah comes in.

“Get Amanda and Mackie to bed okay?”

She sighs and rolls her eyes as she climbs into bed. “They were giggly-drunk. It’s the worst. It reminds me of that scene in Gilmore Girls where Rory has to chase down Logan, Colin, and Finn after they’ve been drinking.”

I let out a laugh. “I don’t love a lot of that season, but that’s a funny bit.”

“So,” she says softly, “how are you and Aaron really doing? How have things been?”

“Fine. It’s the only word I can come up with.”

She looks a little disappointed, but nods.

“What about you? You into that pre-med guy? Has the sex improved? Or is there…anyone else?” I don’t say Joel’s name. Mostly because it feels like playing with fire.

She shrugs. “Sex is what it is. He’s all right, but it’s just sex.”
