I laugh at that. “Yeah, okay. I’m in. We could both use the distraction. And I could use a little bit of fun before Miles and I start the full-time nanny gig tomorrow.”

“Hey, if you needed someone to nanny with you, you should’ve told me,” he says as he stands up and extends his hand to me.

“Yeah, cause you love kids so much,” I say back, letting him pull me up, then grabbing my tank top and shorts and slipping them back on.

We walk across my backyard toward his.

“Hey, I’m a lifeguard. And I could totally have fun with them.”

“Yeah, then I’d have to be the bad guy all the time. Miles is strict. He’ll help keep them in line. Plus, I like him better,” I tease.

He pouts dramatically. “Wow, you’re gonna make me even more miserable.”

I give him a shove. “Whatever. You love me.”

He throws his arm around my shoulder. “Eh. You’ll do.”

“Shut up.”

We continue our banter as we make our way to his car for a fun-filled and hopefully distracting day.

As we walk through the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum looking at memorabilia that reflects incredible players and moments in baseball history, I overhear an older couple in front of us. He’s busy telling his wife about a game he went to years ago where he saw Reggie Jackson play.

His wife sighs and tells him he’s told her the story a hundred times. He smiles and says he knows, but it’s his favorite story, so he’ll never stop telling it. Then I watch as she pouts. He chuckles and says it’s his best memory from before he knew her.

My heart races as I think of Rae. I don’t realize I’m staring at them until Joel elbows me.

“Remind you of anyone?”

I turn to face him. “You already know the answer.”

“Look, I’m not going to insert myself into your relationship. I learned my lesson. But for what it’s worth, if it were me, and Sarah felt this way… I’d rather know than wonder.”

I take a breath, glancing back at the couple as the question I can’t stop asking rattles through my brain yet again. “What if we’re not ready? I don’t think we’d survive if we broke each other again.”

Joel looks into my eyes and puts a hand on my shoulder. “You can’t decide if the two of you are ready. You can only decide if you’re ready. Ready for the fight. Ready to hold on and not give up. Ready for forever, whatever that brings. Because if you are, it doesn’t matter if she is. She’ll get there and if you’re in for the ride, then the two of you will make it.”

I blink at him as Miles and Jamie walk up.

“We done being overly serious? Today is about us and baseball,” Miles says.

I nod. “Yeah, let’s go. I want to check out the stuff about Babe Ruth.” I think back to the gift Rae gave me for Christmas.Every strike brings me closer to the next home run.

Every time we make a mistake, we’re one step closer to finding our way back to each other.

We peruse the gift shop, looking at all the insanely priced apparel and trinkets that we’ll definitely buy, anyway. Despite only being around an hour-and-a-half away, we don’t come up here much.

As I look through some sweatshirts, I nearly run into the older couple from earlier.

“Sorry,” I say.

“Oh, he wasn’t paying any attention,” she says, smirking at him.

“Don’t mind her, she’s trying to stir trouble,” he says with a grin, squeezing her hand.

I can’t help smiling at them. The older man nods knowingly. “You’ve got one too.”
