“This feels like a scene from a Bogart movie,” he teases.

“’Cause our friendship is timeless.”

He chokes on a laugh. “Your jokes are awful.”

“You should hear the ones that don’t make it out of my head.”

He slings his arm around my shoulder and pulls me close as I rest my head on his shoulder and close my eyes.

“Rae Rae, your alarm is loud as fuck,” Jesse says, wiggling his arm against mine.

I sit up and rub my eyes, then pull my phone out of my pocket and silence it, letting out a big yawn as I do.

“Sorry. Gotta make sure I’m awake to watch small children all day.”

Jesse nods. “Fun. I should probably get out of here, then.”

“Yeah, I need to get ready. I’ll walk you down.”

Outside the gate, I pull Jesse into a tight hug. “She’ll come around. I really believe that.”

He gently kisses my forehead. “Thanks, Rae Rae.” As he pulls away, he winks at me. “At least we still have forever.”

I roll my eyes as I laugh. Giving his shoulder a shove, I say, “Get out of here, you bum. Go home and sleep for another three hours.”

“Oh, I plan on it. Later.”

He waves, then as he turns to walk away, almost runs smack into Aaron.

They share a tense look for a moment before Jesse walks across the driveway and Aaron turns to me.

I stare up at the sky.

Really, universe? I realized what happened with Jesse was a mistake. I’m focusing on myself. Trying to have faith in my relationship with Aaron. You’re still gonna do me dirty like that?

Rude.

Aaron’s intense gaze burns into me.

“Hi. What’s up?”

He shakes his head like he’s angry—at me or himself, I’m not sure—and grits out, “Nothing.”

I step to him and grab his arm. “No. Why did you come over?”

“I got your text. Just thought I’d stop by, see if you wanted to grab coffee. Clearly, you’re busy.”

“I’m not,” I say. I know how this looks, but nothing freaking happened. “Jesse was just—”

He holds up his hands. “It doesn’t matter. You don’t owe me an explanation. I should get to the school, anyway.”

“Aaron, wait. Please.”

He looks back at me, annoyed.

“Nothing was happening with Jesse. I texted you for a reason. That hasn’t changed. I really… miss you.”Here I go, letting myself be vulnerable with him again.“Will you come over tonight? Please?”

Softening slightly, he sighs. “Yeah. I’ll see you later. Have a good day.”
