“Jeez, lighten up. This is a good thing, Jame. I promise.”

“All right, well tell me, I’ve got class in two minutes.”

“I just left my coach’s office.”

“Yourcoach? As in, you’re playing?”

“Not exactly. Maybe in the future. But this is even better. I’m gonna be the assistant pitching coach.”

“What? How did you—can students even—shit! This is amazing, A. Damn it. I’m so glad. Seriously. You deserve this. And it’s perfect for you. You’re a great pitcher, but you’re an incredible coach. Those guys are lucky.”

“Thanks, buddy. I promise I’m headed in the right direction now.”

“I believe you. I gotta go, but thanks for calling. You get the weekend to tell anyone important, and then I’m bragging about you.”

“Ha. Thanks. Bye, Jame.”

“Bye, A.”

I hang up as I cruise through the entrance to our dorm. I don’t remember the last time I felt this good.

Rae

I’m running like a maniac across campus. All I want is to talk to Aaron. I want to know how his meeting went. My phone starts ringing loudly. I grab it and stop short, almost toppling over when I see the wordsPromise Advocacyon my caller ID.

Holy shit.

Answer.

I steady my breathing as best I can and shove the phone to my ear. “Rae McKinley.”

“Hi, Rae.” Kristen’s warm voice fills my ear. “How are you today?”

“I’m well thanks and you?” I pull the speaker from my face and take a gasping breath. Why did I have to be running through the cold when I got this call?

“Doing well. I wanted to reach out and speak to you personally today. Official emails go out Monday, but we’re offering you a position as an intern with us.”

I start jumping and dancing in place, trying not to squeal. “Oh my gosh, thank you. I—do I need to officially accept? Because I do.” I laugh at myself. “I’m trying to sound professional, but I’m honestly too excited.”

She laughs too. “I’m glad. I could feel your passion. We’re happy to have you. All the details of what you need to do will be in the email on Monday, and you’ll probably get a phone call from Beth, who is our HR guru.”

“Perfect. I look forward to it.”

“And we look forward to having you. Take care. Have a good weekend, Rae.”

“Thanks so much. You too.”

Oh my god!

I shove my phone in my bag and take off at a sprint.

When I get to the dorm, I go straight to the boys’ room and plow through the door.

Aaron steps out of the kitchenette and takes a look at my wild-eyed expression. He tilts his head.

“I got the internship!” I blurt.

He gets a megawatt smile and steps toward me, pulling me into his arms. “I knew it. I knew you would!”
