I step back and look at him. “And your meeting?”

Somehow, his smile grows bigger. “He offered me a position as their assistant pitching coach.”

My eyes go wide as saucers. I grab his shirt. “Tell me you said yes.”

He smiles again. It’s confident with some swagger. Like the Aaron who kissed me on his truck that night after winning state. He leans in and says, “Without even thinking.”

I jump into his arms, squeezing him as tight as I can. He squeezes me back, then coughs. “Easy, you’re gonna break a rib.”

I let him go but keep my hands on his arms. “I’m so freaking proud of you, Ace.”

His blazing smile melts me, and it’s obvious. I’ve never been able to hide it when I’m swooning over him. He takes half a step toward me and pulls me to his lips, his mouth slanting over mine. My lips part and his tongue gracefully slides in. Last night, our kisses were about comfort. Today, they’re frantic and filled with passion.

He spins us around and leans me against the counter. He pulls my jacket off. My cold hands slide up his warm back. He tenses for a moment before relaxing into it. He smiles and nips at my lip with his teeth.

My fingers knead into his back as his hands slide under my shirt, exploring like they own the place. I lean into him, pressing my chest against his. God, I love kissing him like this. I love when we both feel wild and unhinged.

His fingers graze my waistband and heat pools between my legs. If we were together, he’d be inside me about twenty seconds from now.If we were together.

Damn it.

I slowly untangle my lips from his. Our foreheads drop together.

“Aaron,” I say softly, reaching up to touch his face.

He nods in understanding.

“Hey, I wanted it too,” I reassure him. “But I know where we were headed.” He smiles and laughs a little. “But we can’t… I mean, we’re not—we’re not trying to get back together right now, are we?”

He sighs and shakes his head, looking down. “No. We’re not. We need—I need—“

“We need to focus on ourselves. It’s okay. But I think… we need to stop blurring the lines. We need to try to be friends. Real friends.”

“Not the kind who kiss?” he asks with a smirk.

I stifle a laugh. “Not the kind who kiss.”

“Yeah. Let’s try this all again like friends would.”

I smile at him, then put on my excited voice again. “Aaron, guess what? I got that internship.”

“No way! I got offered a coaching position.”

“That’s incredible! I’m so proud of you.”

“I’m proud of you, too.”

We share a warm hug but don’t linger, then pull apart.

He nods in approval. “We nailed it.”

“Now we need to tell everyone else.”

He glances at the clock. “They should all be back here soon.” Somehow, we all ended up with only morning classes on Fridays. And since the boys don’t have practice tonight, we can relax and have some fun this afternoon.

The door swings open, but it’s not who I’m expecting.

“Trev!” I jump into his arms. “What are you doing here?”
