The thought was a nice one, but Killian's wrong.

Annika is dead, and itisall my fault.

I should have had a better plan, not left it to chance that it would be Peter snorting those drugs. No way I could have known who would do them, but it was sloppy.

This entire thing has been a shit show from the start, and after tonight's little display, I'm not sure what to think about Neil, or rather, what he thinks about me. Not that I care, but fuck, it would be easier if I could get close to him.

I was way too close to getting caught eavesdropping there, and I still don't know what they were actually talking about. And I still have no plan for how to take down the remaining four.

Maybe Kill's plan about bombing the place isn't such a bad one after all.

Maybe I should just admit I am way out of my depth.

Sighing, I turn the note over, staring at the back of it for a moment before grabbing a bottle from my cupboard and getting into my bed. Despite the guilt eating away inside me, I manage to drink enough that I finally drift off with the scent of lilacs filling my head.

Chapter Nineteen

Party at Ground Zero

Echo

“Breakfast?” the cheery voice on the other side of the phone asks.

“Unnggh,” I grunt into the speaker, opening one eye to critically look at the way-too-bright display. It’s almost eleven.

“What is it with you and fucking feeding me?” I mutter.

Killian chuckles. “Why are you arguing? I’ll be there to get you in thirty.”

I nod at the phone as my eyes start to close again before realizing he can’t see me.

“Oh, uh, yeah,” I manage through a yawn. “Half hour. Food.”

I end the call and sit up, bringing my feet over the side of the bed. My head pounds and I let out another groan as I bring a hand up to my head.

“Fuck,” I manage as I stand, accidentally kicking a few empty bottles. That explains the headache. I try to remember last night, but it’s a blur. I remember having trouble sleeping, waking up after an hour, wide awake from nightmares. The vodka helped that quickly enough, but I’m clearly paying for it now.

Dragging my feet, I make my way to the bathroom and turn the shower on full blast. By the time I’m done, I feel a bit more human, and the time tells me Kill will be here any minute. I take a second to look at my face, frowning at the deep bags under my eyes.

Oh, well.

“It was awful,” I admit, stirring my coffee absently. He nods, a sympathetic smile on his face.

“I’m not surprised. Were the cops still there when you got there?”

I shake my head. “No, since I was off early the night it happened, they didn’t need to talk to me. I don’t know how Neil managed to get them to let him stay open after it happened.”

“I told you, Iron Elite has their fingers in a lot of pies. A girl dying on their property is one of those things I’m sure they can get help with,” he points out.

“True.”

We sit in silence for several minutes and I feel his eyes on me, the questions he wants to ask but isn’t.

“Are you okay?” he finally asks.

“As okay as can be expected,” I reply honestly, shifting in my seat.

“I overheard some things last night,” I tell him before explaining the bits of conversation I heard. I don’t tell him Neil caught me outside his door.
