“What’s going on up there?” Savannah asks, frowning as she coughs.

“Umm, kinda sorta put a bomb upstairs.”

Both of their eyes widen and I shrug.

“They pissed me off. Now, lets—”

“You fucking cunt! I’m going to fucking kill you!”

We all freeze. Neil’s voice seems to echo through the cavernous room. I quickly turn to them.

“Is there anyone else down here?”

They both shake their heads. Savannah stifles a cough. I don’t know how the smoke is getting down here, but it’s getting more noticeable by the second.

“Thank fuck. Okay, here’s what I need you to do….”

Chapter Thirty-Two

I Will Wait

Killian

My hands are clenched so tightly around the wheel I’ve long since lost feeling in my fingertips. All night I had to wait, and the thought of leaving Echo in their hands for even another second….

“Tell me again,” I say for the fourth time. Dee, to her credit, hasn’t complained.

“In the basement, I’m sure. It’s practically a bunker, built after Neil bought this place. Not on any records. Unless you were told, you’d never know it was there.”

My grip tightens.

“How many girls?”

As before, Dee hesitates on this question, her voice quieting.

“I’ve seen up to ten,” her voice is almost a whisper. I glance to the side and see the regret on her face. I have to resist the urge to say anything else, keep the judgement out of my voice and expression. I can only imagine the things I would do if it were Echo on the line, or Katrina. As abhorrent as what Dee’s allowed to happen is, people will do awful things in the name of love.

I press down harder on the pedal.

Just a bit longer, baby.

Chapter Thirty-Three

Smoke on the Water

Echo

I stand at the end of the hall, feeling naked and exposed and waiting in my ready stance. I look up to the high ceiling and notice I can’t see it clearly, distorted as it is by smoke.

Smoke may rise, but there’s only so much oxygen down here. I don’t have long.

I hear footsteps and coughs coming closer and make fists with my toes, shifting my weight between my legs. My training runs through my mind, focusing me.

You’ve got one chance at this, the voice tells me.

Protect your head, keep your arms in. Hit their soft bits. You know, the spots that inflict the most pain. Don’t let them get too close, keep moving. Tire them out, then go in for the kill.

“You fucking bitch!”
