“I do miss them. I haven’t spoken to them in a long—” I shut my mouth.

“Why haven’t you spoken to them.” Karma put her fork down. “What exactly has been going on with you, Karma?” Still direct and to the point, as always. “We know you were rescued, but from who?”

“I don’t know if I’m supposed to say.” I rolled my lips into my mouth.

“She’s right.” Hope patted my hand. “Don’t tell us anything unless Buff tells you it’s okay.”

Karma sighed and pointed at Hope. “She’s a newbie old lady. When it’s just us women, we can tell all as long as we vow to not tell anyone outside our circle.”

“Oh.” Hope grimaced. “I don’t think so. Levi told me under no circumstances was I to talk about club business. I mean, if he told me something about it.”

“You’re too sweet, Hope. Just ask Lady M when she returns. I wouldn’t steer either of you wrong. Right, Reign?”

“Um, yeah. I guess.” What else was I to say? Karma looked a lot different from the last time I saw her. She had an edge about her that hadn’t been there when she was with Cobra. I remembered her being soft and sweet. Now, she gave off an air of badassery that matched Lady M.

“We’re in the old ladies club, girls. We are a tribe. We stick together and have each other’s back through thick and thin.”

“Like a marriage?” Hope seemed to be considering Karma’s words.

“Exactly.” Karma licked her fork. “If we can’t trust and rely on each other, we’ll never make it through the tough times.”

“I guess I see your point.” I chewed on my thumbnail. If Jonah didn’t return soon, I’d go looking for him. “Say, how long does church last?”

“However long it takes,” Karma replied.

“Yup.” Hope nodded in agreement. “Did you want to call your parents to let them know you’re coming over?”

“I wish I could, but I don’t have my cell phone with me.” Wait. I could borrow one of theirs. I was sure they’d let me use their phones.

No. Bad idea, Reign. It was a horrible idea. Keg would trace the call back to me, then all these people would be in danger because of my selfishness.

“You can use mine.” Karma pushed her phone across the table.

“As tempting as that is, and you have no idea how much I want to take you up on your offer, I must decline.” My heart sank, eyeing her device.

“Why’s that?” Hope asked.

“Yeah, why can’t you use my phone?” Karma just wouldn’t let it go.

“In case my folk’s phones are tapped. I don’t want yours to get traced.” I wouldn’t say anymore. These girls—mostly Karma—were persistent.

“Oh, is that it? I can get you a burner phone.” She popped out of her chair and went to the kitchen island. Lady M keeps a supply of them next to the drawer of knives.” She returned to the table and put the black phone in front of me.

“A flip phone?” I stared at it.

“They’re cheap and hard to trace. But to be sure, keep the call short.”

“I don’t know.” What would I tell my mom, anyway? A biker from South Dakota might be after them because I left him. And now I was with Jonah, another biker. My mother would think I had lost my mind.

“It’s up to you. We aren’t forcing you to do anything.” Karma tilted her head, watching me.

“That’s right. This is just an option.” Hope moved the phone a little closer to me.

“You two are too much.” I picked up the device and dialed my mom’s phone. I’d wing it. I’d be quick before Jonah came. He wouldn’t like me calling my mom, but he had no idea what Keg was capable of doing.

“Hello?” My mother’s voice made me tear up.

“Mom?”
