I held my breath. Jonah would be furious once Cobra told him what I did.

Lady M appeared out of thin air. “What did you girls do while I was gone? I could hear the yelling upstairs in Nova’s room.”

I covered my mouth with my hand, unable to own up to my mistake. This was bad.

“Karma and I helped Reign call her mom,” Hope told her. “Karma gave her a burner phone.”

“Huh, I don’t understand the yelling.” Lady M put her hand on her hip.

“Me either.” Hope shrugged.

“What the hell is going on in here?” Hustler entered, making a beeline for Hope. “I heard Cobra yelling. Was it at you, baby?”

“Not exactly.”

“Hope and Karma helped Reign call her mom,” Lady M told him.

“Oh shit.” Hustler grimaced, helping Hope stand. “Let’s go to our room.”

“Reign?” Jonah’s angry voice sent an icy chill down my spine. “Come. Here.” He pointed at the floor by his boots.

“Oh, damn.” I rose to my feet, but they didn’t move.

“Don’t be angry, Buff. Karma and I pushed her to call her mom,” Hope said as Hustler gently pushed her out of the kitchen. “It’s not all on her.”

“The fuck it isn’t all on her. Right, Reign?” He gestured with his finger to come to him. “I won’t ask you again. Come, or I’ll blister your ass in front of everyone.”

“Jonah,” Lady M whisper-shouted.

“Mom, stay out of my business.”

Oh, God. I wasn’t here more than an hour, and I’d gotten all the old ladies in trouble.

“Sorry, honey. I can’t overstep here.” She took my hand. “But if he hurts you, Ben will deal with him.”

“Christ. I would never beat her.” Jonah removed my hand from Lady M’s and took me upstairs. “I leave you for a short while, and you’re creating all kinds of problems.” He pounded the stairs as we went up to the second floor.

“I’m sorry.” I didn’t recall ever seeing him like this before.

“No, you’re not.” He opened his bedroom door, and I went in. “Just like always, you do as you damn well please. When will you consider others?”

“I was considering others. My parents,” I snapped back.

“Nice.” He shut the door and locked it. “I told you I would protect them, but did you listen?”

“You put them second to your club just like you did me!”

“I always put you first.” He got in my face. “It was you who put me second. You left me!” He stabbed his finger in the middle of his chest.

“This again?” I shoved him. “We’ve been through this. What do you want me to say? I screwed up. I made the wrong decision, flunked out of college, and have paid dearly for it.” Being with that monster cost me more than I ever cared to admit. “I doubt sorry will ever be enough for you.”

“No, I guess it won’t.”

His response stole the air out of my lungs. I stepped away from him. Not because I feared he might strike me. The unyielding vibe he sent off terrified me, like if I pushed him too far, I would lose him.

“You see Reign. I don’t want your words.”

“What do you want?” I hoped he said sex. But anyone who loved their parents would’ve done what I did. Most people would’ve gone rouge to protect their loved ones, but I stayed put like he told me.
