Yes, I could because being with him meant more to me than anything else.

“Reign?” My dad pulled me into his arms. “I’m so happy to see you.”

“Dad, I’m so glad you’re okay.” Emotion bubbled up in my chest when my mom joined our embrace.

“My world is complete again.” She cried, hugging and kissing our cheeks.

“You should know I’m not thrilled to be here.” He just had to spoil our reunion. Couldn’t he wait until the morning before complaining about Jonah?

“I’m not surprised,” I said in a sarcastic tone.

“Honestly, Bill. Do you need to do this now? We’re finally all together,” Mom told him sweetly, probably hoping to defuse him.

Dad glanced around the room. Lady M, Karma, and Hope were speaking in hushed voices.

“I don’t feel comfortable here. Let’s go home.” He dropped his hands and took out his phone. “I’ll schedule us a ride.”

“Are you out of your mind?” I hissed. “Jonah just saved your life, and you’re going to act like this? You’re a piece of work.” I wasn’t sure what came over me, but something triggered me.

“Reign, show your dad respect. He’s only looking out for us.” Mom’s words set me off even more.

“I’d show him respect if he deserved it. I’m tired of you treating Jonah like he’s the worst kind of human.” Since the day I introduced my dad to Jonah, he never liked him or gave him a fair chance. I ignored the sneers and jabs he gave Jonah, but not anymore.

“Maybe not the worst, but he is far from the best,” Dad snapped at me. “You deserve better than a dirty biker.”

“How dare you come into my house and insult my son.” Lady M stepped in, putting her hands on her hips.

“I didn’t ask to come into your house. I don’t mean any disrespect, but your kind isn’t my kind of people.”

“Bill,” Mom whisper-shouted.

Lady M gaped, her face turning beet red. She pointed her finger looking like she was about to unleash holy hell on my dad.

I jumped between them and faced my dad. “You owe Lady M an apology.”

“For speaking the truth?” he scoffed. “I’m sure she’s heard worse.”

“For being a rude asshole. If you don’t want to be here, then leave.” I pointed at the front door. “I won’t stop you. But you should know, your life is in danger. I hope you can hide from the monster who held me captive.”

“Bill, please calm down. We’ll figure this out tomorrow. It’s late, and we’re all tired.” My mother was the peacekeeper in the family. She avoided conflict at all costs to maintain harmony in our home.

“Be quiet, Alondra,” he growled. The tone in his voice made the hairs on my arms stand. I flashed back to when I was a little girl. He was yelling at her in their room. She was crying. I should’ve been asleep, but the door slammed and woke me up. The next day she had a black eye.

How could I have forgotten all that?

“Don’t talk to her that way.” I got in his face, rolling my hands into fists. “I remember.”

“Remember what?”

“The yelling. The crying. The bruises.” I touched my cheek. My bruise was slightly green from when Keg hit me.

“Reign, that’s enough,” my mom said pleadingly.

“He hit you.”

She went white as a sheet, panic in her eyes as she forced a smile. “He didn’t.” She looked at me, then Lady M. Karma and Hope remained silent.

“I’ve had enough of this.” My dad was the only man in the room. If he lost his shit, what would I do? “I’m leaving.”
