“Good. Go.” My heart hardened instantly as more memories flooded my mind.

I remembered broken dishes, lamps, and mirrors. My mother never spoke against my dad. She’d always been obedient. She kept the peace and accepted her situation.

Sort of like what I’d done with Keg.

“I did everything for you.” He glared at me. “Treated you like a princess. Sold my soul to the Devil to send you to college, and this is the thanks you give me? I worked and slaved, sacrificing everything for you.”

“I never asked to go to New York. You pushed me to go out of state.”

“Because I wanted you away from that scumbag!” He yelled, his face contorting with rage.

“Jonah is twice the man you are. He never laid a hand on me. He treated me like a queen. Can’t say the same for you with mom. All this time, you were a wife beater.” I let the insulting words roll off my tongue and steeled myself for his backlash.

I shouldn’t have blinked.

His hand struck my face, making me yelp.

“Get out of my house.” Lady M held a gun in front of her like a pro. “Nobody harms my family. Get out before I blow your hand off.”

My mom cried beside me. I pulled her close and sent up a silent prayer. If she left with him, it would break my heart.

My rose-colored glasses had been destroyed after Keg forced me to stay with him. I learned then how the world was dark and evil at times. Not once had I realized my dad was a mean, violent man. He’d been wearing a mask all this time. Now that it was off, I didn’t recognize him.

How could I have been so blind?

“Alondra, let’s go.” He went to the door.

“Don’t go, Mom.”

“He’s my husband, honey.”

“Do you love him? When was the last time he hurt you?”

“I’ll be okay.” She kissed my cheek and released my hand.

“No. Don’t go with him. Please, Mom. Choose me.”

“Alondra!” Dad yelled.

She trembled, looking at me, then at him.

“When he gets you home, he’ll punish you for this.” I knew how it worked. The victim was blamed for everything and punished for doing no wrong. Simply existing was enough to warrant a beating if the abuser needed to blow off some steam. “Don’t be at the mercy of his fists anymore, Mom.”

She started to cry, nodding her head. “Yes, I’ll stay with you.”

Dad roared, grabbing my mother’s hair and jerking her in front of him.

“Shit,” Lady M muttered.

“I better not see you at my home again, Reign. If this is the life you choose, stay out of mine.” He walked backward toward the door, dragging my mom with him.

But dear old dad didn’t see my man.

Jonah must’ve gone to the kitchen from the second set of stairs after his shower. I wondered how much he’d heard and seen.

My man surprised my dad and put him in a choke hold. “Let go of her.” He squeezed harder, making my dad’s eyes bulge.

Mom fell to the ground when dad released her and crawled toward me, her eyes wild with terror.
