Page 22 of Loving Rush

I squeezed the phone so hard; it was a surprise it didn't snap.

LUX: What sort of dinner are we talking about?

I was trying to stay calm. Keep my sentences casual. Inside I was freaking out. This gorgeous and sweet guy seemed to like me. Who was I kidding, though? When the dots showing he was typing back flickered to life, I'd never been more excited. It was like Christmas morning and all other holidays rolled into one.

RUSH: Nice enough for a dress and a vehicle other than my motorcycle.

LUX: What? No motorcycle?

I love the rush,I thought and then snorted. Because it was too soon to love anyone, wasn’t it? Yes, yes, it was. Still, I could get dressed up. I hadn't done that in, well, a really long time. I had the nice dress Mom bought me for the Make a Wish foundation dinner two years ago. But would it fit?

RUSH: If that's okay?

LUX: Sounds perfect. Where shall we meet?

More dancing dots. I clutched a hand over my heart, forcing myself to breathe.

RUSH: It's a date, so I'll come by your house and pick you up.

I bit my lip so hard it stung. But did I want him coming to the house? I'd announced to Mom that we were at war. That meant the house was enemy territory. But if she saw how happy I was, maybe she'd call a truce.

LUX: Okay but bring the bike.

Once I hit send, I shivered at the idea of being so close to him with so little on.

RUSH: lol Have I created a motorcycle monster?

I laughed at the thought that perhaps he had.

LUX: I think so.

RUSH: How about no motorcycle this time but next?

He was already planning another date with me. That felt like a good thing.

RUSH: What's your favorite music?

LUX: Alright, next time, then.

I sent the text and then thought about my favorite music. For years, I'd spent time in doctor's offices listening to whatever music was playing over the sound system. But my favorite was probably eighties hair bands. Did I tell him that? I shrugged and decided why not. There was no point in lying. Either he liked me for who I was, or he didn't.

LUX: Ever heard of Def Leppard or Bon Jovi?

RUSH: Wait, are you sure you're only twenty-two?

LUX: Ha! I just like that music. It's fun to dance to.

RUSH: I'm taking mental notes.

LUX: What kind of music do you like?

My guess was hard rock.

RUSH: It depends on my mood. I don't listen to music unless there's a reason. I'll create a playlist for our date.

That sounded romantic. I was interested to see what kind of music he'd pick.

LUX: Cool. Do you watch movies?
