Chapter 8

Kincaid~

I had only one class left, and then I could call it a day. The first thing that I planned on doing when I got home was announce on my social media that I was staying my ass home tomorrow night. My phone has been going off with all kinds of Halloween party invitations, and I just wasn’t feeling it this year. Even though I’d already purchased a costume, going out on a night when August Remington could be dressed as anything didn’t seem wise.

There was also Laney to consider. While it was rumored that Jennifer Polk had dropped out, Laney was still very much around. While the guys might not view her as a threat, I never made the mistake of underestimating people. Even though she was meaningless in the scheme of things, the girl could still cause some waves if she wanted to.

Knowing that I was cutting it close, I wasn’t paying attention when I started rushing across campus. I had stopped for one final cup of coffee, though it was already rather late in the day, but a girl needed all the help she could get.

So, in my quest to get to class, I hadn’t seen Fox until the jerk had my arm gripped in his hand, yanking me with him.

“What the hell are you doing?” I squawked. “Where are we going?”

“We need to talk,” he answered, not bothering to even spare me a glance.

“I have class,” I stated as I let him continue to drag my along. “You know? Class? The reason we attend here?”

Ignoring me, the guy kept dragging me until we were secluded enough between a huge oak tree and small nook between two of the science buildings.

It was too private for my liking.

“I just had a little run-in with Remington,” he announced, and while I shouldn’t be surprised, I kind of was.

That was the hardest thing about all this. We were going to run into August and Laney on campus, and we couldn’t do anything about it. If we acted, then we risked the chance of this all blowing up in our faces. It was that very reason that Saxton had agreed to stay home with Hastings this week. Not only did he want to take care of her, but he knew-just like the rest of us-that if he bumped into August on campus, there’d be no stopping Saxton from killing him in broad daylight. And because he was Saxton Voss, the school had done everything they could to make sure Saxton and Hastings had access to this week’s curriculum. With the announcement that they’d gotten married, the school had just assumed that Saxton and Hastings were honeymooning it.

They couldn’t be more wrong.

I readjusted my book bag over my shoulder. “What happened? What did he say?”

“I’m having a shit day, so when I saw him, I kind of just went after him,” he admitted. “When he mentioned Elias as a witness, I backed off.”

“So, now we officially know that August knows that Elias is following him,” I remarked, thinking out loud more than anything else.

“Yeah, but he doesn’t seem to care,” Fox replied.

“What do you mean?” When I went to readjust my book bag, Fox reached out and took it from me, and it was all I could do to keep my head in the game.

“When I went off on him, I mentioned Hastings, and he denied doing anything to her.”

“Of course, he did,” I scoffed. “He probably knew you’d kill him if he admitted it.”

Fox tossed my bag over his shoulder and the weight of both bags had to be significant, but the guy seemed just fine. “Things got pretty heated after that,” he went on.

“Did you guys get into a fight?” Nothing would surprise me at this point.

He shook his head. “No,” he answered. “Sutton got there before it could come to that.”

“Well, then it sounds as if everything’s oka-”

“He threatened to go after you,” he said, interrupting me.

“What?”

“The motherfucker commented on how all you girls were being looked after, but now that Saxton had Hastings to worry about, who was looking out for you,” he explained. “Though I’m pretty sure that he doesn’t know that you and Saxton are close, you’re still Saxton’s supporter. August knows you’re significant, even if he doesn’t know the exact details.”

I wasn’t being conceited.

I swear that I wasn’t.
