I just knew that August Remington and his family were no match for me and my family. I also had an ace in the hole, and that was Saxton Voss and his family.

“He’d have to be stupid to come after me,” I told him.

“I agree,” Fox replied. “But honestly, at this point, I don’t think August is working with a full deck anymore. This thing with Rylee has him really fucked up.” He shook his head. “You should have seen his reaction when I called him a dickless bitch who couldn’t seal the deal with Rylee. He practically turned rabid.”

I took a deep breath, processing what he was telling me. “Okay, so…let’s say he is stupid enough to come after me. What would be the point?”

There was a heartbeat of silence before Fox said, “When he insinuated that you might be next, I lost it.”

My eyes bugged almost out of my head. “You did what?”

Fox ran his hand through his dark hair, leaving it a stressed-out mess. When his hazel eyes locked onto my black ones, he admitted his culpability in all this. “I slammed him up against the wall and told him that if he went anywhere near you, I’d kill him myself.”

This time, I ran my hands through my hair. “Goddamn it, Harrington.”

“I know,” he muttered, frustrated. “I know.”

I started pacing, though in small steps. It wasn’t that I was afraid of August, because I wasn’t. I wasn’t afraid of anyone. Another toxic trait that I had. I was self-destructive enough not to fear anyone. Sometimes, I felt like my only purpose in life was to avenge my brother. There wasn’t anything else for me. And since nothing was going to stop me from doing that, I didn’t see obstacles. I never saw anything for me to worry about, since nothing would ever get in my way.

Fox had been my only curveball.

When I stopped pacing, I found myself standing right back in front of him. “Okay, so…” I shrugged. “Let him come after me. It’s not like I give a fuck. Plus, I’m not like the other girls. August Remington doesn’t scare me.”

“Jesus Christ,” he swore. “Do you hear yourself?”

“Look, I-”

“That’s your fucking problem,” Fox spat. “Nothing fucking scares you. You look at life like a goddamn option. Happiness, sadness, regret, joy, hate, love…they’re all goddamn options to you.” I bit my tongue as he ranted at me. “That’s what has everyone so fucking terrified of you. You don’t care about any of the consequences that come from the way you live your life or the decisions you make, and who in the fuck wants to get on the bad side of that?”

“So, it’s a bad thing that I’m not afraid of August?” I argued. “Don’t you think it’s better that he come after me than Rylee, Sutton, or Hastings again? I can handle August Remington.”

“So can me, Saxton, Ross, and Stone,” he shot back. “Let us do our fucking jobs as men!” The last was said on a roar, and like most men, Fox was turning this into a battle of the sexes. My ability to take care of myself had nothing to do with his masculinity.

I took another deep, patience breath before saying, “Saxton has his hands full with Hastings. Why put him in the position of having to divide his time between me and his wife when it’s not necessary?”

Hate, hurt, resentment, anger, and regret were like a strobe light flashing in his eyes. Taking my bag off his shoulder, he set it by my feet. “You can’t even bring yourself to see the sense in it, can you?” Fox let out a tired sigh. “You’d really rather face August in a dark alley then let me be an option, wouldn’t you?”

He had it all wrong.

“Shouldn’t you be worried about Alexis?” I asked. “She might only be your supporter, but August doesn’t know that. He could easily go after her, too.”

His eyes flashed, but he quickly got whatever that emotion was under control. “Yeah, I probably should,” he agreed. “She might actually feel like she needs me.”

I pushed the jealousy aside. Again, I had no right to feel anything when it came to Fox and whoever was in his life.

Grabbing my bag, I said, “Thanks for the heads up, Harrington.”

“Don’t mention it, Black,” he replied before walking away from me for probably the last time.
