Chapter 11

Kincaid~

For the most part, last night had been humbling. After we had all agreed on what our next move would be, everyone had left, Saxton staying behind to make sure that I was okay. It had taken a whole hour to convince Saxton to go home to his wife. Rylee and Stone had ended up giving Hastings a ride back to their place where Saxton had picked her up later.

It hadn’t been until I’d gone through my nighttime ritual of getting ready for bed that I let myself suffer the pain of Fox’s wrath. With the exception of what he’d said about Saxton, the rest of it had been on point and his right. The tears had come, and they’d been more agonizing than when I had cried all over Saxton a couple of weeks ago. Those tears had been exhausted tears. The tears from last night had been from heartbreak.

Fox Harrington was done with me.

Done with washing my face and brushing my teeth, I grabbed my phone off the nightstand, then went to make some coffee. After stepping back to let the coffee maker do its thing, I checked my phone, and my stomach suddenly felt hollow.

SaxyV: Call me as soon as u see this

Sutton: R u ok?

Hastings: I’m here if u need me

Stone: Remember, u can’t believe everything u c on social media

Rylee: Do we hate him? I’ll hate him if that’s what we’re doing

Despite the trepidation, I had to smile at Rylee’s text. That girl really was one-of-a-kind.

Ross: I’m sure there’s an explanation. Don’t go setting the city on fire

Ross’ text got a smile out of me, too. I wasn’t sure if he was serious or trying to lighten whatever I was about to deal with, but I appreciated the dark humor behind it.

With Stone giving me the first clue, I pulled up the social media account I used most, and there were a lot of notifications for one night, and they all involved Fox Harrington. So, going to his account, my heart cracked a little with the most recent pictures that he’d been tagged in.

I knew that the guy with him was Joshua Brooks, his best friend. I also knew that Fox was down in Southern California if he was hanging out with Josh. Joshua went to college there. I had learned all this during those three months that we’d been seeing each other. I also knew that Joshua was bisexual and that his life hasn’t always been easy.

As I scrolled through the pictures, there was a very pretty blonde on Joshua’s arm in most of them, and they looked happy. It also looked like they were out partying at a bar somewhere. The pictures looked like your typical college night out. Friends, drinks, dancing, laughter…all the normal stuff that goes on in college towns.

There was also the pretty redhead that looked to be friends with the blonde. She was tall and had that classic red hair, green eyes, and constellation of freckles combo working for her. She also had a nice body underneath that short skirt and loose cut-off tank top she’d been wearing.

Brit Connelly.

That was the name on the tagging account, and it looked like Marley was her friend’s name. Both girls were beautiful, and there was nothing wrong with the pictures. They all looked happy. While I’d been crying myself to sleep last night, Fox had been having the time of his life, and he deserved it.

I immediately put a stop to the torture when I came to a picture of Brit angling her phone for a selfie, Fox sitting with Joshua and Marley at a table behind her, the caption reading, ‘Caught me a Fox”.

Putting my phone down, the coffee signaled that it was ready, but my hands were wrapped around the edge of the counter, pain permeating every inch of my heart. Fox had been more than having the time of his life, and I had to find a way to be okay with that.

Coffee ignored, I fired off a group text to my concerned friends.

Me: I’m good. Thanks 4 checking on me tho

After firing off the text, I called Saxton because I knew that if I didn’t, he’d be storming through my front door, madder than shit.

The man answered on the first ring. “Babe-”

“I’m fine,” I lied. “Honest.”

“You know, I’m getting really tired of hearing that bullshit rehearsed line, Kincaid,” he said seriously. “That shit may work on everyone else, but not on me.”

I leaned back against the counter, suddenly feeling so damn exhausted. “What do you want me to tell you, Saxton?” I asked.

“The fucking truth would be nice,” he replied with a touch of annoyance. “If you’re hurt, then it’s okay to admit that.”
