But it will.

Geani huffs and comes back into my bedroom. “They’re not listening to me.”

“I can’t really blame them,” I say, forcing a smile through the awkwardness of the situation. “They don’t really understand everything that’s happened.”

“That’s fair,” Geani says. “I wanted to tell them everything that happened, but also didn’t want to freak them out if I had the story wrong. Plus, I wasn’t sure how much you’d want people to know. It’s a bit of a tender topic. I just gave them a sob story of how you’re their friend and they need to let you in your house.”

I’m surprised Geani didn’t word vomit everything all over them. She loves gossip and this would have been the talk of the town.

“But they knew I was hurt?”

“It was pretty obvious that you were hurt.”

Everything inside me goes numb. The tingles go away and the pain is nowhere to be found. The grogginess is gone and I sit straight up. “And you’re sure they saw that I was badly hurt?”

Geani shakes her head.

“And they still haven’t come to check on me?” I ask in complete shock.

Geani shakes her head.

I want to yell and scream and go kick their asses like I did to Geani, but I also know that Nick is sitting somewhere watching the numbers on my monitor. I know I can’t yell or get upset. I have to be rational and I have to see things from both sides.

I have to make things right.

And I know just how to make that happen.

Chapter twenty-one

Kiss and Make-up Already

Myfriendsarefairlysimple in this life. You feed them, tell them they’re pretty, and talk about trashy novels with them. You don’t go behind their backs or hurt the ones they love.

Simple.

I, however, rode the fine line of pissing them off and now I have to fix it.

Sliding off the bed, I walk around Geani and head for the bedroom door. I motion for her to follow me and we make our way out to the living room where Amanda, Leeah, and Megan are all sitting with their arms crossed.

They’re waiting for me. I’m not stupid.

“Alright,” I say.

“No,” Amanda says, getting to her feet. “You don’t get to talk first. We do.”

I put my hands behind my back and give her a small nod telling her to go ahead and say what she needs to say.

“You really hurt us,” Leeah says, getting to her feet and standing close enough to Amanda that she feels safe enough to let loose on me. “You told us that we could do VIP rooms together. You told us that you’d be there for us and that we’d make bank.”

“Then, you disappeared without saying anything to us,” Amanda adds. “You weren’t answering your phone. You didn’t make a reappearance at The Plaza to tell us you were okay. You didn’t even find us before you left so we could help you through everything.”

“You just fucking left,” Megan adds, staying seated on the couch with her arms crossed over her chest. She isn’t looking at me. She’s focused on her shoes as she bounces her leg in the way she does when she’s anxious or pissed off.

I’m guessing she’s both.

Megan’s words make my head drop and I sigh. “I know,” I say. Then, I look at them in a way of asking them if they’re finished. If it’s my turn to talk yet.

Megan still avoids looking at me. Leeah looks at Amanda who then looks at me and reluctantly nods.
