“Do you have another lousy idea?”
Milo continues to laugh, and I park the car in the first spot I find. We get out of the SUV, and we walk quietly towards the bar at the end of the street to sit on the terrace.
“Did you talk to Harriet about it?”
“Of course, that was the first thing I did when I left that damn living room.Hi babe, I almost slept with Scarlett. You know, the one who is not supposed to be a rival for you, who I swear consider an untouchable sister and yet who I really wanted to fuck. No offense?”
“I was thinking more like:Baby I screwed up, but I love you.”
I tense up and he notices it right away, frowning at me.
“You never told her you loved her?”
“I never really thought about it that way.”
“OK, here is where the problem starts. Waiter!”
Milo raises an arm and orders us two beers for us in a hurry. They’re on the table in no time, and I take several sips in a row, under the inquisitive gaze of my friend.
“Let’s go over the basics,” he begins seriously. “You’re dating Harriet. Do you like her?”
“Of course, I like her.”
“But you don’t love her.”
“I appreciate her,” I say.
“Yeah. So, you’re dating Harriet and youlikeher. You wanted to sleep with Scarlett, but she’s like your sister and you’ve known her forever.”
“She is part of my life. I really love her,” I reply.
Milo ticks. I take a sip of my beer, uncomfortably.
“Do you love her like a sister?”
“Of course, I do!”
I gasp.
“Do you want to do it again?” he asks.
Yes.
“No!”
“So, what’s the problem?”
In my head. In my dick. In the room right next to mine.
“I can’t do that to Edgar,” I say.
“He won’t know, since it doesn’t count.”
I run a weary hand over my face. If it doesn’t count, then why am I thinking about it so much? Why does it screw me so much? This bullshit. This stupid attraction is impossible! I feel like shit, unable to get a handle on this bunch of conflicting feelings.
“You kissed her, period. If you don’t want to anymore, then move on.”
“Yeah,” I sigh. “You’re right.”
